Rights To Sego Name in Question [UPDATED]

According to news reporters for Christian Voice Magazine, new information has surfaced concerning the departure of Kasey Kemp and Judson Horner from Naomi & The Segos.

At some point last week Naomi Sego Reader told a CVM reporter that she had received a letter from former group members Kasey Kemp and Judson Horner stating that they owned the name, "The Segos" and informed her that she could no longer use "The Segos" as part of her group name. After using the name for over 50 years, Naomi is now being told she can no longer use the name, although it has been a professional name for James Sego, late husband of Naomi Sego Reader as The Sego Brothers and Naomi.

CVM investigation also revealed that Horner and Kemp jointly registered "the Segos" as an LLC (Limited Liability Company) on April 28, 2008, in the state of North Carolina, with Judson Horner listed as the "initial registrant." Additionally, the web domain, http://www.thesegos.com , was registered on April 15, 2008 with Judson Horner listed as the registrant for the domain.

Naomi Sego has expressed her hope of a peaceful resolve and desires the prayers of her friends and supporters.

UPDATE

Our offices were contacted by Kasey Kemp this morning with the following statements:

I have read the statment on your site and we have some MAJOR misunderstandings. While part of the group, Judson and I expressed interest in purchasing the Sego name. At that period in time, Naomi expressed her interest in us continuing beyond her retirement, whenever that may be. She told us she would like to speak to her son and would let us know the outcome. As you know, a process such as this is very lengthy and can sometimes take months. While still in question, we began the paper work hoping this would relieve Naomi of current stresses and allow us a secure future. However, when it became necessary for us to leave the group because of financial stress, we started the dissolution of the LLC. We did leave a letter concerning the ownership of the name, but it's intent was to stop Terry Dorsey from kicking us off dates we had promised to ful-fill. As a matter of fact, I have already spoken with Naomi's son, Carlton Sego about the dissolvement. He is in complete understanding of the original intent of the formation and has no problems with our actions. The reason it still appears on the government's site is because the process takes several days to remove it. However it IS inactive. There are no problems between us and Naomi and a call for a "peaceful resolvment" is not needed. There is nothing to resolve because we are NOT using the Sego name and never intend to without proper permission.

Our offices have been unable to confirm at this time to what extent Carlton Sego is involved in Naomi Sego's interests or in this situation.

What a terrible situation for Naomi. I don't know what these men are thinking, but it certainly seems like they are not treating Naomi Sego with the love and respect she has earned from her many, many years of Godly service. My first thoughts are extreme disappointment in these two men and I certainly would not go hear them sing or purchase any products from them either personally or through a website. It is almost unbelievable.

It's a great way for these guys to kill their career before it even starts...way to go!

Perhaps these men should use the professional name "Seagulls" since they just flew right on off into the sunset of their careers.

I hope there's a very hot corner waiting just for this disgusting pair! What on earth makes them think that anyone with half a brain would support them now?

It's a shame that these young men would treat a legend like Ms.Reader this way. It appears these young men are more interested in other things besides sharing the gospel. I agree with the other comments about killing their careers before it ever starts.

Ok, I've watched this junk fill these sites for to long. I'm going to nip this in the bud before it goes any further. I have sent an email to Susan concerning this in hopes it will be taken down because there are some BIG misunderstandings going on here.

First of all, we DID discuss the possibility with Naomi about purchasing the name WHEN we were part of the group. We thought it would help relieve her of some of the management stress that she was having to face each week. Respectfully considering her age, and the stress of operating a group these days, we had hoped it would be a help to her. Also, we were in hopes that when it did come time for her to retire, we could continue the name that she has worked so hard to uphold. She said she would like to talk with her Son, but she didn't have any problems with it. Because NOTHING moves quickly when it comes to Government matters, we obtained and filed the proper papers, which again, she DID know about. However, when it became necessary for us to leave the group, due to major financial stress, we filed for the dissolution of the LLC. Even though the website says it is still active, the proper papers HAVE been filed and we are awaiting the final result. There was a letter left for Naomi's new manager, Terry Dorsey, stating we had filed for the name as he was trying to relieve us from a weekend we had promised Naomi we would do. This weekend was to fulfill our commitment to her and end our five week notice. Terry did remove us from the weekend so he and former baritone, Scott Spangler, could sing with her in our place. Again, this letter stating the ownership was given to Terry in hopes we could fulfill our last weekend with Naomi. When Terry removed us from the weekend, we continued the process of dissolving the LLC. I spoke with Naomi's Son, Carlton Sego, several days ago to inform him of this entire matter and he is perfectly fine with the situation. He understands our original intent, and why we left the note. He also understands that there has NEVER been a conflict between us and Naomi, and there was NEVER a battle to keep her name...END OF STORY!

Judson, nor I, are trying to sing or do dates under the Sego name. We did one service at a Church several weeks ago (while still part of the group) that they refered to us as members of Naomi and the Segos, but no Sego name was offcially used. As a matter of fact, we have been concentrating on our business and have not had time to focus on any singing. After having endured junk like these rumors, we not even sure we want to be in such an industry.

I'm sure that several of you are going to continue to talk and think what you want. However, you can take it straight from the horses mouth that this IS the truth, this IS the way it happened, and there is NO Segos without Naomi. Judson, and especially myself, have way to much respect for her to do anything like that. None of this was ever meant to harm her in anyway, we just wanted to help. When it became financially impossible, we had to seek other routes. Why cant people accept the simple truth instead of manufacturing false stories and hurting other people in the process?

I sincerly hope this helps to clear the air about the situation. There is no need to pray for a resolvement, because there is nothing to resolve. Judson and I left a group because of financial problems and everyone is tring to continue with there lives. This is getting way out of hand and there is no need for it to. Please, help stop these false stories and accept the truth of the matter.

Respectfully Yours,
Kasey Kemp

First of all, when the writer of the original article in the Christian Voice Magazine researched the matter, there appears to be evidence to support Naomi's concerns regarding the applications, etc. It is unfortunate that you had a misunderstanding with her new manager and used the leverage you had to try to influence him to let you sing that last concert. I believe you may have participated in this issue being blown out of proportion. That could be the impetus for the entire misunderstanding. I'm glad you are not doing as the article suggested and your motives were to try to help Naomi.

Naomi and I have chosen not to react to any of the negative publicity becuase it is neither appropriate nor Christian-like. I agree with Kasey that this is being blown out of proportion and false statements are being made. Since the financial situation has been made public I will confirm that Kasey and Judson were ONLY removed from what was to be their last weekend with Naomi & the Segos because of the possibility that their payroll would not be met. Naomi did not want them to have to work and possibly not be paid. I must admit that I myself have, until now, had a false impression of what Kasey and Judson were doing. I apologize to them for that false impression. I appreciate what Kasey said in his comment and wish he and Judson nothing but the best as they begin their business. I pray that the original friendship we have had will be able to continue. Now folks, lets stop all this talk. PLEASE!!

As an observer of this very sad situation I am appalled at the idea that anyone would try and hurt a woman who has spent her life singing the gospel. Naomi has been attached by members of the gospel community for several years now. ALL of these people will be given the reward they have earned by the Father.
God is not the author of confusion and deception and there are several who have participated in the attempt of the "undoing" of a lovely woman who has been an example of loyalty to her fans and to her commitment to getting the gospel out with her music.
Shame on all of those who have tried to poison the truth with lies and deception.

Thanks for clearing up this situation. I am also glad that this was a situation to try and help Ms. Sego. Kasey, I really respect the way you explained the situation in a Christian manner. Let's all learn from this and continue what God has called us to do. I too want to apologize for my part in continuing the misunderstanding.
