In a special Anthony Burger Productions newsletter, LuAnn Burger, wife of the late Anthony Burger, shares news about her daughter's attendance at the Tuesday night (10/07/08) Presidential debate at Belmont University in Nashville:
As the eyes of the world focused on Belmont University and the Presidential Debate, we were so proud that Christian music was represented at the event by our own Lori. Her personal invitation to attend and be in the audience for the debate was truly a once in a lifetime opportunity. As others viewed the event on big screens from the Ryman Auditorium and various other local venues, Lori experienced the exciting atmosphere present as Senator John McCain and Senator Barack Obama took center stage.
In Her Own Words
Lori gives a behind the scenes look into the historic event:
As a graduate student at Belmont, I realize the importance of the critical presidential debate and how much of an honor it was to attend. The night before the debate, I received ticket confirmation and my Secret Service instructions! Later I spoke with Gloria Gaither and sang "I've got a golden ticket", and she expressed her jealousy! I promised her I would take good pictures.
We were instructed to arrive and park at Greer Stadium. Then, I took my spot in the extensive line around the ticketing tent. We were told that no food or drink was permitted once we left for the debate (I guess it's a security matter). All eager attendees were searched and went through metal detectors. After we were cleared, we boarded the shuttle buses. I sat in the front and an armed guard gave turn by turn directions as if the driver had no idea where she was taking us!
As the bus approached the Curb Event Center, people were lined on the streets and media crews were everywhere. I must admit the atmosphere was quite electrifying and I'm not even a politician! We had a few minutes to take pictures as we were watched by Secret Service and other people who were "talking to their wrists". Once in the debate hall, the shock of the night came,.. it was freezing cold.. not just any kind of cold, the type of cold that made me ache the whole night! But, I guess no one wants a sweaty politician on TV.
There were several people I recognized like Al Gore, Fred Thompson, Eddie George, Brad Paisley, Vince Gill, Kimberly Williams Paisley, Amy Grant and many others. We were welcomed by several debate officials including Tom Brokaw, Then the great debate started and you saw what I saw.
After the debate we all made our way like cattle back towards the bus embarkation area. However, the buses were not there. The lines were backed up in the rain. Not wanting to get wet or sick, we (Amy Grant, Vince Gill, Chaz Corzine and a few others) decided to take the "red carpet" treatment,.. I mean "carpet" treatment and camp out on the floor until the rainy lines died down. While waiting I was interviewed by Fox News and asked to reflect on the night. I snapped a few more pictures and enjoyed the company and conversation. Tired, hungry, and enlightened I arrived home around midnight. It was an unforgettable evening and I was very privileged to attend.
