With nurses singing ³Happy Birthday² to him on Christmas Eve, Jake Hess celebrated his 76th birthday in the intensive care unit of a hospital near Columbus, GA. Jake¹s condition is slowly improving from a heart attack he suffered on December 14. A family spokesman said doctors indicate that a case of pneumonia he developed after the heart attack has cleared up. Nurses presented Jake a Santa Claus and a snowman on his birthday, then offered an apology. "We couldn't find a male angel," the nurse said. "That's what we wanted."
Family members say they continue to be overwhelmed by the outpouring of love and concern shown by Jake¹s friends and fans and hope everyone will keep Jake on their prayer list in this difficult time.

The news about Jake today is encouraging. We are praying for his full recovery.
If I may, I would like to share a couple of memories which may be of some interest to a few of Jake's fans. When I was growing up in Monroe, Louisiana, in the '50s my buddy and I never missed a Blackwood/Statesmen concert. When I first saw Jake in concert he was still single. Then, in one concert, Hovie announced that Jake was to be married. Some time later, Jake was walking with a cane, and Hovie observed, joking of course, 'I think he sassed her, and she kicked him.' It would be years before I knew of Jake's lovely wife, Joyce.
Once, at an outdoor concert, my buddy and I went over to talk with Jake. We expressed surprise that he was eating a snow cone just before singing. Jake laughed and said that some people don't even eat before singing, but that eating never bothered his singing ability.
My buddy was Tommy Rainer, who later sang lead in Dan Huskey's Revelaires quartet, and still later in the Deep South Quartet, the Homeland Harmony Quartet, and others. When Jake was married Tommy rented Jake's former apartment. He told me Jake was always helpful and Kind to him, as we would expect of Jake. -

When I was a teenager 50 years ago, I would always take my Grandmother to see Jake in Birmingham at the all-night singings and he has always been an inspiration and spiritual guide in my life. He has faced difficulties before in his lifetime, and I pray he overcomes them again this time. My prayers are with Jake and his family for a speedy recovery.
