Can anyone tell me the best way to find the writers of SG songs?  I have copied some new & old songs from my CD’s to my laptop, but some do not have the writers listed on the CD.  Is there a website that would list them?  Any help would be appreciated.

We’re working on such a site…
http://www.sghistory.com

We already have several thousand songs listed.

That’s awesome, David!  Would it be a good thing to set it up like a wiki where people can help add to the database?  It would help fill the database with songs, but perhaps it would set up a problem with guaranteeing the validity.  Just thinking out loud and glad to see you’re trying to solve a real problem!

Thanks for your reply, David.  I went on your site, however the info I was looking for was not there.  I purchased the McKamey’s song, “You Are With Me”, from ITunes.  When I went to the song on your site, I could not locate who the writer of the song was.  This is what I’m looking for.

Susan,
The site actually is a wiki…password controlled. There’s roughly fifteen individuals who have been involved directly with editing the site…with five or six doing the bulk of what you see. Of course, we’ve had outside contributions of information as well as numerous individuals who have been kind enough to allow us to use info they already had compiled.

Doug,
Well, at first you asked if such a website exists, and said you were looking for info on several songs “new & old.” Obviously, we don’t have every song listed that’s ever been recorded, but as I said before, we do have a few thousand there. I thought you were asking in a general manner.

If you had initially asked about “You Are With Me” by the McKameys, I do happen to have specific info about that one song in my personal library.

“You Are With Me” as recorded by the McKameys on _Telling The Story_ was written by Amy Keffer Shellum and Joe Johnston. The associated publishers are Christian Taylor Music/BMI and Winding Way Music/ASCAP. The CD liner notes neglected to include the year of copyright.

I hope that helps.

I noticed some were incorrect…what is the method of verifying the writers?

It’s a relatively simple matter for most people to drop us an email and let us know when they notice anything that needs to be corrected. Have you ever done that?

Some other very good sources are http://www.ascap.com and http://www.bmi.com. Both of these have MASSIVE listings of registered titles, as well as publishing info (although years are not included). I have used both of these sites many times doing research for my own recordings.

Doug, another way to find out who wrote a song is just ask on here.  I’ve done it before, and the collective knowledge of the people who frequent this site is something.  Usually within a day you will find your answer.

I’d add that the songs not licensed by ASCAP or BMI are typically licensed by http://www.sesac.com/
