I’m reminded by another thread and thought I’d ask the question.  What ever happened to the Haven of Rest Quartet.

If I remember the Haven of Rest Quartet has a very tight sound, close harmony and a sweetness to their presentation.  I really enjoyed hearing them.  Are they still singing or???

In a quick Google search I found that… The Haven Quartet, a four-man Christian vocal group, began in 1934 as the musical arm of the Haven of Rest radio broadcast ministry. Radio was a medium in its infancy, and Christian broadcasting in particular was a new, uncharted territory. The Haven of Rest program, titled after the old gospel hymn of the same name, and replete with nautical references, was broadcast live, Mondays through Fridays, originally from the studio of pioneering radio station KFI in Los Angeles. As the broadcast became better known, it began being aired over a larger and larger network of radio stations in the US and Canada from its own distinctive ship-like studio in Hollywood, complete with portholes and decks. The Haven Quartet would sing 4-5 songs live over the air during each day†s broadcast, either a cappella or with organ accompaniment.

By the 1950’s, the group had begun pre recording the broadcast music in library fashion, and due to popular demand, began issuing recordings of their music to their listeners and the general public. Today, after 65 years of musical excellence, the Haven Quartet continues to record their trademark treatments of traditional hymns and gospel songs, as well as contemporary Christian music. Fresh, creative, arrangements, a bright, clean vocal sound, and impassioned lead vocals from each of the four quartet members: these are the hallmarks of the Haven Quartet.

Group members: Walt Harrah, Randy Crenshaw, Bill Cantos, Jeff Gunn

I did a radio broadcast with the Haven of Rest Quartet right out of Anaheim near where you are, Jim (from the arena) in August of 1983. They were on a “Revivaltime” radio broadcast that I engineered and produced for Dan Betzer. We originated the broadcast from the arena there (it was recorded) and we released that broadcast on 600 US stations and in 85 other countries about 6 weeks later.

They were great singers, and a great bunch of guys to work with. I hope they’re still singing. They should be.

I hear this program once in awhile and they have the Haven Quartet on the show singing at least once.
The program is usually pretty good - current events worked in Biblically.  I don’t think this is the old Haven of Rest, but it is Haven Ministries.

Actually, Sally, you just jogged my memory.

When we were with them in 1983, they either had just changed their name to “Haven”, or were in the process of the transition.

Cliff - I just cannot imagine your memory needing to be jogged!!!  When you post, you post in such interesting detail, you surely must remember most everything!  (that means - you’re not gettin old!!!  No “sumetimers for Cliff Cerce!)

I get another year older on Saturday. I’m tempted to go to the West Coast, just to delay it another 2 hours, but we have 3 concerts here in the Midwest this weekend.

The reason I can post in such detail is because I just make it up - everyone old enough to know the difference can’t remember the details either, so they don’t even know to set the record straight.

(Just kidding, of course).

I’m a little concerned. On another site, I called Ben Harris (from the excellent Southern Sound Quartet) Ben Turner (who sings for the Harbor Lights Quartet of Winterset, Iowa - we’ve sung with them often up there).

Last year, I posted Gerald Williams’ name as Gerald Wilson - and Gayla Fooks would have punched me in the nose, if she didn’t know I was an old man.

Then I discovered a few weeks ago on John Scheideman’s blog that I referred to “half of the album” as “have of the album” and, there was no way to fix it.

Typo’s - ‘fraid not. (very afraid).

I hope I’m not starting to lose it. Gives me something else to pray about.

But, I have hope. Real old people like Deon still make a lot of sense - so there’s hope for me.

My husband’s favorite saying for “stuff” - it’s not mind over matter, it’s, if you don’t mind, it doesn’t matter!
(sometimes he’s SO encouraging!  [not] ) LOL
