One of the smoothest and classiest groups out on the Southern Gospel circuit is the Whisnants. They have always been consistent with their strong songs and smooth vocals. I always get excited when this group puts out a new recording because I know what to expect from this group, and they always deliver the goods. “Joy” is just another reason why I love the Whisnants.
”WHAT THE LORD HAS DONE FOR ME” opens the recording with it’s easy flowing tempo and is a testament to the many great things the Lord has done for us all and the song really sets the tone for the entire recording. The pace picks up with the song whence the title of the recording is derived from called ”WHAT A BLESSED JOY.”
Featuring the sweet vocals of Susan Whisnant, ”EVEN IN THE VALLEY” is a magnificent song and will no doubt become a fan favorite very soon. SoGospelNews’ own Amy Marie Unthank and Rebecca J. Peck co-wrote this awesome testimony of faith that “even in the valley, God is good.”
Aaron Hise takes his turn on the medium tempo ”I’LL NEVER WALK AWAY” which would be a good choice for a future single and is a wonderful testimony in song saying “I’ve made a promise it’s one I won’t break, Lord I’ll never walk away.” Jeff Whisnant then takes a feature with a unique song entitled ”CHRISTIANS WON’T BURN.” Just the title alone is enough to shout over!
”GOD’S BIGGER THAN THAT” is a highly enjoyable song with a strong encouraging message. The inclusion of the classic Gordon Jensen song “Bigger than Any Mountain” as a bridge makes the song even more enjoyable.
Susan steps up once again to sing the medium tempo ”I HAVE SEEN THE LORD” and in keeping with the medium tempo feel, Jeff steps up to sing, ”I LIKE IT ALL.”
The tempo finally slows down once again as Aaron sings the humbling ”UNTIL I KNEEL.” Written by Rodney Griffin, the honest lyrics of the chorus says it all…"Until I kneel and pray, hear what You say, Lord what have I to give…until I ask what You would have me do, get my orders from Your throne, how can I be real until I kneel?”
The unique song ”LORD WILLING AND THE CHURCH DON’T RISE” is a call to the Church to get to work and as we come to the end of the recording, we find ”NAIL IT TO THE CROSS” which calls us to shed ourselves of our guilt and sin and to simply nail it to the cross.
No surprises here, just great singing, strong lyrics, good music and a smooth sound; all the ingredients needed to provide over 36 minutes of listening pleasure. Though on their own label and no backing of a major record company, the Whisnants have risen to become one of the most popular independent groups out there, and this recording shows good reason why.
