Voices of Praise are a fine mixed quartet from a hot bed of Southern Gospel Music, Southeast Illinois. Their latest recording, produced by Bill Schell, is a very nice recording featuring a lot of good cover material.
They kick the album off with a nice rendition of a Mark Mathes song, “I’m Not What I Was”. This features the big bass voice of Chuck Albright. Chuck has been singing bass around Southern IL for years and does a great job on this one.
Group manager, Terry Johnson slows the pace down with a very pleasing song, “Never the Less”. Shelia Johnson follows with a good job on “It’s Enough”. This is a nice three quarter time song with country flair.
“Nail it to the Cross” is a very pretty song featuring soprano, Kim Adams. Kim is a bundle of energy on the stage and does a good job on this song. “According to the Scriptures” is a more traditional quartet song and picks the tempo back up.
Terry lends his smooth baritone voice to “Thank God for Grace” This is one of my favorite songs on the project. “When the Morning Breaks” will get your foot tapping and is another more traditional style song.
Sheila seems to choose the more country style songs on the project. These really fit her voice well. “By His Grace” is just such a song. “This Jordan” is a good ensemble song featuring some good quartet singing. Chuck takes the second verse. When he sings in his upper range, he will remind you a little of George Beverly Shea.
“The Shepherd”, written by producer Bill Schell, is the highlight of the c.d. This is a new take on the story of the ninety and nine. It’s a wonderful thing to know that the Shepherd left Heaven for me. This is a beautiful ballad, featuring Kim. She nails this song.
I have had the privilege to hear these fine folks in concert and I have found them to be very genuine. The project is one that they can be proud of and one they can build upon. If you’re from the Southern IL, make sure to go see these folks. You won’t be disappointed.
