Tim Surrett's first major impression on me came in 1989 when he recorded a song called "It Won't Be Long" on his first recording with the Kingsmen. I had heard him on recording with the Carolinians, but that song was my first "real" introduction to his above average singing abilities. Later on, songs like "Real Good, Feel Good Song", "I Will Rise Up From My Grave", "Safe Now", "I Just Stopped By on my way Home", "Christ Arose" and of course, "Wish You Were Here" continued to solidify what I had already figured out…Tim Surrett is a true artist when it comes to singing. Now out on his own as a soloist, and his second solo recording under his belt, despite vocal problems Tim continues to show his artistry as a great vocalist.

The blues stylings of "NOBODY'S FAULT BUT MINE" starts things off before things slow down for Tim's signature song, "WISH YOU WERE HERE".

"SEE WHAT THE LORD HAS DONE" is a slightly progressive tune that I think would do well for Tim on radio. Not sure the style I'd call it…maybe country/blues or something like that, but no matter…it's a cool tune.

Long been one of my favorite songs of all time, it's great hearing Tim wrap his vocals around the wonderful lyrics of "HAD IT NOT BEEN" before setting the groove for the classic tune, "HEADIN' HOME". Though Tim does well on the song, I find it is much more suited for a male quartet.

The message in the folk "TRY A LITTLE KINDNESS" still rings true today though written over 35 years ago and Tim pulls it off extremely well before turning out two previously recorded cuts from Tim's last recording with the Kingsmen. "HE LOOKED BEYOND THE CROSS," sounds as if it was lifted "as is" from the recording, while "THE WELL OF GRACE", removes the former featured vocal and adds in Tim.

The mountain/acoustical stylings of "HOLD TO GOD'S UNCHANCHING HAND" leads very well into the closing tune done acapella, "YOU NEVER MENTIONED HIM TO ME", which Tim pulls off almost flawlessly.

Tim's vocal problems are evident here, as he has a raspy quality about his voice. But, Tim can still shovel it out and sings every song exceptionally well and like a true professional that he is. I am glad Tim is still singing for it would be a sad day if he were to ever stop singing. If your taste is typical Bluegrass, straight Southern Gospel or Country Gospel, you'll find a lot to enjoy about this recording.

Personal Favs: NOBODY'S FAULT BUT MINE; WISH YOU WERE HERE; SEE WHAT THE LORD HAS DONE; HAD IT NOT BEEN; TRY A LITTLE KINDNESS

James, thanks for the great review of Tim's project. I haven't heard it yet, but plan on getting it soon. I have his first solo CD, and have all his work with the Kingsmen and the Isaacs , and he is one of my favorite singers for sure. I hated to see him leave the Kingsmen, but understand, with his vocal problems.
