The Redemptions - Keeper of the Keys

This project opens with a happy tune called, “This Time.” The group has a good tight sound and blend. “One Drop of Blood” slows things down, and we immediately get to hear The Redemptions’ musical range. Moving ahead to a song made popular by the Sound Quartet in the 80’s, “Here Comes the Bride.” I was glad to hear this song re-done, and the group does a fine job. “Ring the Bells of Heaven” done in its very traditional style will be a favorite among SG lovers.
Another moving ballad, “One Chose to Stay” written by Drew Foster, features Robyn, the female of the mixed trio. It’s the first song we get to hear her on, and it finishes big. The title cut, “Keeper of the Keys” follows in a similar style to the opening tune, “This Time,” both written by group member Kevin Wombie. This group has a good solid sound. “What a Prayer Can Do” reminded me lyrically of the afore mentioned “One Drop of Blood.” Both talk about the power of one. It’s a clean sounding medium tempo tune.
The last cut, “Master Composer” penned by Phil Cross, is by far my favorite on the record. They leave you with a great last impression of The Redemptions with this beautiful lyric and melody. Other tunes included are “At the Mention of His Name,” and “Never a Man Spoke like This Man.” Overall I enjoyed this group. They had some pitch issues, especially toward the end of the recording, excluding the last tune. They have a great blend, and I thought their song selection lyrically in terms of message was good, but musically could have been stronger. There were several tunes that were just “there” for me. I think they deserve a listen, and I see great potential for growth.
