imageLabel: Mountain Top Records (Lamp Music Group)
Produced By: Mike Pillow and The Pioneers Quartet
Song Titles: Saints Will Rise, When Men Pray, On The Right Trail, Jesus Is The Light, I Get Happy, ‘Til The Storm Passes By, When The Redeemed Shall Gather Home, I Wanna Know How It Feels, He’ll Be There, The Coming Of The Lord, Answer For The Lost, I Would Crawl All The Way To The River

I had never encountered this great group of young men until the 2003 SoGospelNews.com Convention last month.  I got to meet them at the brunch, and liked them immediately. When the afternoon concert started, they were just a few bars into their first song when they had me hooked!  Tight harmonies, smooth blends when called for, and all the power needed for upbeat songs.  They had the complete package. Michael Whitaker at Tenor, Daniel Wade on Lead, Baritone Christopher Griffith, and the baseboard rattling low bass of Hurley Spinks make up the Pioneers.

Mike Pillow at Lamp Music Group put together a great support group for the project.  Musicians on the project include Andrew Ishee on Grand Piano and Keyboards, Randy Miller on Harmonica and Dobro, and “Rabbit” Easter on Dobro and Steel Guitar.

This group was formed in October of 2001, and they’ve already got a lot going. As this group grows and gels even closer together, I think we’ll be hearing a lot more from them.

My favorites from this project include two songs that Christopher Griffith wrote: the title song, “On The Right Trail” and “He’ll Be There” Great song!  Other favorites include “I Get Happy” and “When Men Pray.”

If you like traditional Southern Gospel quartets, you won’t be disappointed to add this one to your collection.

I had the opportunity to sing with Michael, Chris, and Daniel several years ago when they were in another quartet. Not only are they the "real deal" musically, but each one demonstrated nothing but a solid Christian character. Over a 3 month period, I got to travel and sing with these guys, and you can tell pretty easily in such close quarters who is His or not. And these guys really are. Though I never met Hurley Spinks, I would tend to think he is as solid spiritually as they are, simply because the other 3 wouldn't have it any other way.
