The Joyaires - “It’s Real”
2002/Independent Release
The name “Joyaires” has passed before my eyes several times in the past. I must admit though, I never really paid much attention to them. You see ads for relatively unknown artists in gospel music publications all the time, and the Joyaires were just another group name to me. That was until I was introduced to their music via a good friend of mine. I listened to their CD and must admit I was pretty impressed. Their untainted, simple country stylings somehow appealed to me. Their style is very close to that of the McKameys, Singing Cookes, The Redeemed and other artists in that vein of music. Consisting of husband and wife team, Ernie and Debbie Peters, along with Rebecca Fraker, their sound at times is extremely reminiscent to that of the Sego Brothers and Naomi of the 1960’s and 1970’s and the Hemphills of the 1970’s. You won’t find slick vocals or unique music arrangements on this CD. But if you like that simple, down home country sound, then you will really take pleasure in listening to the Joyaires newest recording, “It’s Real.”
I really enjoy listening to the old LeeRoy Abernathy song, ”I WANT TO KNOW MORE ABOUT MY LORD” as well as another oldie goldie, ”IT’S REAL.” Both of the aforementioned songs really show how well this group can tackle the old campmeeting type songs. They are both very well done.
I was thrilled to see one of my favorite Kyla Rowland songs ”I’M GLAD I GOT LOST”, which seems to fit the Joyaires sound like a glove! Kyla also penned another song entitled ”IN A LITTLE WHILE.” I was also delighted to see them include the classic Jeff Gibson tune ”I AM WITH THEE.” I thought this song had long since been left in the early 1980’s. It was good to see this great song revived. The current single the group is running with, ”WHY SHOULD GOD BLESS AMERICA?” is very fitting for this time and place our country is in and it poses a very poignant question.
Other songs found on this recording are ”NOTHING TO TURN BACK TO”, ”THERE IS LIFE BEYOND THE GRAVE”, ”ANYTIME” and the Dee Gaskin classic, ”VICTORY IS SWEET.” I must give honorable mention for their rendition of the Gaither classic, ”I BELIEVE IN A HILL CALLED MOUNT CALVARY.” For their style, they did a really good job on this song!
One observation I have made is that the group has a very heavy vibrato in their singing which, depending upon your tastes, you will either like or dislike. I have never met this group in person, but believe through their music, that they are sincere Christian people, carrying out the Gospel through their unique brand of Southern Gospel Music.
