“I’ll Make It Someday” is the first and title cut on this record written by the Carter’s producer Gary Wayne Bledsoe. Their sound reminds me a little bit of the Goodman’s sound. Probably closer to the last group, which included Howard and Vestal Goodman along with longtime friend Johnny Minick, rather than the original Happy Goodman Family. Nevertheless a very enjoyable traditional SG sound. “After Awhile” has a few bluegrass touches and flows nicely into “Look What I’m Trading for a Mansion,” which features the only lady of the mixed trio, Sandy. Her sound is perhaps a little more Hopper than Goodman, but ever as nice to listen to.
“While the Ages Roll” seemed to drag a little bit, and I was ready to hear the next tune. “He Means the World to Me” written by Phil Cross could have perhaps been sung with a bit more energy, but overall was a good cut. One of SG’s standby’s is up next, “Lights of Home.” The Carter’s due a fine job, but I find myself wishing they would have broken up the last three tunes with an up-tempo number. “I’ve Come too Far,” being one of my favorite SG songs, earned points just for being included. “I’ll be Satisfied,” finally picks things up and lightens the mood.
“Just Count Your Blessings” had quite a few pitch problems which surprised me, because I hadn’t heard many other missed pitches up to this point. The problems continued into “Prodigal Son,” though not as severe. “Condemned No More,” starts off with Sandy being featured and then switches to one of the guys. I would have liked to have heard Sandy continue, as I thought it was one of her best vocals on the project, and as she leads the choruses the male vocal seemed kind of oddly placed for a random two or three line feature. Despite that, it was one of my favorites on the record. The project ends with an a cappella version of “What Heaven Means to Me,” which starts off strong, but encounters some of the previous pitch issues towards the middle. I’m sure this goes over great in live concert, but is quite a bold attempt if you’re not a capella experts such as the Martins or Hope’s Call.
Overall The Carter’s have a great traditional SG sound, and seem to be dedicated to choosing songs that compliment their strength in sound. Song selection was great, though I might have switched around the order a little bit. The first half of the record is very strong, and gets watered down with those pesky pitch problems later on. However, I think The Carter’s made a solid effort and know what they’re doing out there. Keep it up!
