Hilton, Virginia has given us a wonderful group that is making an impact on the Southern Gospel Music scene, The Browders. They have a progressive country Gospel sound and they write some very nice material.
Matthew Browder has penned the opening cut on the project, “Stand Up For Jesus”. This is their current single release and has already reached the top 10 on the national charts. The title cut is “Be a Light”. This song has a New Country sound and is very commercial.
“Poor to a King’s Kid” is a heartfelt song written by Matthew. The vocal on this one has a lot of feeling in it. Dad, Tommy, takes the lead on a real hand clapper, “Waitin’ on My Change”. “More Than Three Nails” is another pretty ballad, written by Matthew and Tommy. They kick the afterburners in on a great song, “Search for the Old Paths” written by Tommy Browder.
Sonya Browder is featured on “My First Love”, a very pretty ballad that she also wrote. She has a very commercial voice and does a great job on this song. This might make a good single choice for them if they choose a ballad. “God’s Appointed Time” is a more traditional three quarter time Southern Gospel song and features one of the boys. This song was co-written by Matthew and mom, Merrita Browder.
Some special effects kick off this Bluegrass style song, “I’ve Got A Mansion”. You hear the cracks and pops of an old album but soon it’s very clear that this is a brand new cut. Bluegrass fans will love this one. “Almost Home” is the only song on this project not written by a family member. This old song features Merrita Browder. They close the album out with a kickin’ tune, “Bless His Name”, featuring Sonya.
Not being very familiar with the Browders prior to hearing this project, I had a hard time distinguishing the voices of Tommy and Matthew, but I must mention that they both did some great singing on this c.d. This is a group to keep your eyes on. They have a bright future in our industry.
