2002/ACA-New Haven Records
With its contrasting styles and hip sound, this recording makes me think of the classic Marietta Wolfe solo album from the late 70s and Mark Lowry’s solo recording, “But Seriously”, from a the late 90s. Produced by Reggie Smith, many of these songs you would never hear the Greenes do, as Taranda steps out of the “Southern Gospel” box slightly, and tries her hand at many varying styles, and I really like what I hear! This recording proves that Taranda could be a viable soloist should the opportunity ever present itself.
Getting things underway and straight out of the 70’s is the Andre Crouch song, “ALONG CAME JESUS.” Recently recorded by the Booth Brothers, Taranda puts her own spin on this classic song.
Next, we are completely captivated as Taranda pours everything she has into the masterpiece “WHAT A DAY, WHAT A MOMENT.” Picture this…"What a day, what a moment just to see Him in the air, what a thrill to behold Him, oh the glory we shall share, just to live within His presence, humbly bowed down at His feet.” What a day that will be!
Probably the weakest song on this recording is “HIS MERCIES ARE NEW EVERY MORNING.” Lyrically, it is a very strong song, but I think Taranda sounds a little weak, especially on the final chorus. Nevertheless, it will surely become a favorite of many people, simply because of the firm message in the song.
Taranda shows out on the R&B sounding, “I COULD NEVER PRAISE HIM ENOUGH.” In complete contrast, Taranda turns in a solid performance on a very subdued and reflective version of the Southern Gospel classic, “GOD ON THE MOUNTAIN.” Then things pick back up again as Taranda really puts on the groove on the vocally challenging “SEND A LITTLE RAIN.” Trust me when I say, you’ve never heard her sing like this before! And if that isn’t enough, just wait until you hear her sing “ELI.” Written by Tim Greene, this musically aggressive story in song taken straight from the Bible, is one that’ll stick with you long after the music stops.
In a simple song of praise, Taranda beautifully sings the old song, “HE’S GOOD.” Next we are enthralled as she sings the expressive “YOU AMAZE ME,” which is another excellent song of praise.
One of my all-time favorite songs is the classic “WHAT A WONDERFUL WORLD.” Though not a gospel song, it always brings a warm and fuzzy feeling whenever I hear this song sung.
One of the things that I love about Taranda’s singing is that she has a good amount of emotion in her voice, and you just can’t help but believe what she is singing about. I am so glad she branched out to do a solo recording. The best thing I think Taranda did was find someone to produce her who could take her out of her normal element of the Greenes and take her out of that mindset, and Reggie Smith took her to new places vocally and musically, and I think it was an excellent collaboration. Some people may not take a liking to this recording since it is so different. But all I can say to Taranda is…"You go girl!”
