I fell in love with the Sons Family the very first time I heard their music about 4 years ago. They have a down-home, country style that a lot of people will find enjoyable. They stretched themselves just a little bit on a couple of songs on this recording, but they managed to stay true to who they are and I appreciate that.
The recording starts off with the upbeat “I WONDER WHO WILL SHOUT THE LOUDEST” , written by Michael Frost and sets the pace for the recording before things slow down for the heart wrenching, “DON'T ASK ME TO STAY” , which features Gayle Sons (who has the ability of pulling on every single one of your heart strings) and the song leads perfectly into the Rusty Goodman classic, “WAIT'LL YOU SEE MY BRAND NEW HOME”.
With a nice steel guitar intro, the title song, “WHEN I GET THERE” , which features an excellent performance by Eric Baker (who is becoming one of my favorite male vocalists), reminds us that one day we won't be saying “When I get there” anymore, because we'll finally be there enjoying all that Heaven holds.
With a few power chords on the electric guitar as an intro and its progressive sounds, “WAITING FOR MY RIDE”, featuring CharLotte Baker, offers something a little different for the Sons Family. I'll be interested in seeing how this song does as a single, since it is something totally different for the group. Things move on to the uptempo Southern Gospel sounds of the fiddle accented, “COMING AFTER ME”, written by Lori Kelly. I think this song would make a great radio tune.
Things slow back down as Gayle sings the Goodman favorite, “JUST ANY DAY NOW” before Eric turns in an excellence performance on the great song of faith and determination entitled, “I BELIEVE GOD”, also written by Lori Kelly and this song offers an excellent single possibility as well. The uptempo, “JUST A FEW MORE MILES” is a fun song that you'll be singing long after the music stops.
Complete with a chorus of “My Jesus I Love Thee” as a bridge, CharLotte sings, “I LOVE YOU LORD” and provides us with a wonderful moment of praise to the Lord, as does the final song, “EVERYTHING I AM”.
I do realize that the Sons Family are not the most polished singers in the industry, but they are one of the best at what they do. Sometimes you have to look beyond the technical aspects of a singer and a recording and ask if that recording or singer connects with you. I have to honestly say that this latest release from the Sons Family really connects with me. Not everybody will like this group's style and sound, and that's cool, but for me I'll take the Sons Family any day. In my assessment, there isn't a bad song on the whole recording. The quality is excellent and the song selection is superb and for the most part fit the Sons Family to a ‘T'. Some of the arrangements could be have been spiced up a bit, but overall, are very well done. I suppose my main gripe would be the cover art and photography, which really could have been better. I would expect this type of cover more so on a table project than with a major release. But overall, this is by far the best recording the Sons Family has come out with.
Personal Favs: DON'T ASK ME TO STAY; WHEN I GET THERE; COMING AFTER ME; JUST ANY DAY NOW; I BELIEVE GOD; JUST A FEW MORE MILES; EVERYTHING I AM
