A group that with each recording, I have become increasingly fond of is the Kentucky based family group, the Sons Family.  This is by far, their best effort to date.  Musically and vocally, they seem to have found themselves on this recording.  I think I have stated this in previous reviews of their music, that if your musical persuasion is that of the McKameys, Singing Cookes, etc., you will love the Sons Family.  Their simple, country stylings and heartfelt vocals will find a special place in your heart.

Consisting of Gayle Sons, her daughter CharLotte Baker and husband, Eric Baker, I have to say, I am very proud of this group and this newest recording.  It seems in the previous two recordings, they were searching for their sound.  But now I think they have it and they have found some of the strongest songs they’ve ever recorded on this recording.  They remind of the McKameys when they were starting to make a name back in the early 80s.  Fast-forward 20 years, and I think we have a repeat right here with the Sons Family.  They have all the same ingredients…down home singing, a simple message, a genuineness and a love for the Lord and that something special that many groups just can’t seem to grasp hold of.  They have a unique sound that is their own and I am anxious to see what the next year holds for this truly anointed family.

Starting off the recording with its medium tempo is the expectant “SOMEDAY.” This song really sets the pace for the entire recording.
I think it was very smart to release “I WENT ON MY KNEES A SINNER” as a single.  This is an excellent radio song and one I think will do well for the group.  Featuring family matriarch, Gayle Sons, you can tell she’s been there and knows about the remarkable transformation from a sinner to a Child of God.

One of the strongest songs found on here is “WE NEED TO PRAY.” Offering some very sound and scriptural advice, they sing “we need to sing those old songs of victory, we need to shout if we’re free indeed, we need to march into the battle with our shield and our sword, and testify of the tender mercies of the Lord…if there’s anything we need, we need to pray.”

A song that holds a very special place in my heart is “WAITING FOR MY MIRACLE”, featuring CharLotte.  I find myself hitting the repeat button and allowing my heart to soak in the message that “I’m just kneeling here, waiting for my miracle, it’s no problem to believe, now I’m just waiting to receive…because I know that what I ask, He’ll do for me.” What a reassuring song.  I hope to see this song released to radio eventually.

Eric turns in an excellent performance on “HE WAS MY LIGHTHOUSE.” A great message of hope and comfort is found in this song of reliance on the Lord, as the song proclaims, “…He was my lighthouse, my only way out of life’s dark troubled sea…He gently calms the storm and sets my captive soul free.”

One song that’s a little different for the Sons Family but fits them to a ‘T’ is the song “LEAVE MY TROUBLES BEHIND ME.” I have found myself repeating this song many times.  This is a highly enjoyable number is one you’ll be humming long after the music stops.

Other songs include the heartfelt “ANGEL VOICES”, “LOOK WHO’S IN THE SHIP”, “TO THE OTHER SIDE” (an excellent up tempo song for the group and would make a great single) and “THE TOMB IS EMPTY AT JERUSALEM.”

Rounding out this collection of songs are a few classics.  A very simple version (piano accompaniment only, and very basic at that) of “JESUS, SAVIOR PILOT ME” and an acapella collection of “Jesus Loves Me” and “Oh How I Love Jesus” called “HYMN MEDLEY” close out the recording.  Honorable mention must be given for them tackling an acapella number.

The group seems to do better on the medium to slow tempo songs, rather than the up-tempo numbers.  Granted, there are some really good upbeat songs on this recording, but as a rule, they seem to do better on the slower ones.

I must admit that I am smitten by the Sons Family.  In the past, I liked them; with this recording they have made me a die-hard fan.  They have a certain quality about them that draws me to their music.  Their sound is not one that everyone will enjoy, and as far as vocalists, I wouldn’t call them smooth as silk.  But if you like Southern Gospel with a down home flavor and country feel, then you will really love the Sons Family.  Get used to them, they are here to stay, and I’m glad about it!  Check them out on the web: http://www.thesonsfamily.com
