I fell in love with Sharron Kay King’s music sometime in the early part of last year as I stumbled upon her music. It was her heart and her earthy style of singing that won me over. A style that is uniquely her own, she has a voice that is a mix between Emmylou Harris and Barbara Fairchild. There is nothing fancy or robust about her voice at all, just a lot of heart and emotion as she wraps herself around each lyric and makes you listen.
Written by one of my favorite people, Tammy Dunaway along with Leonard Barrier, “THE LEAST ONE IN THE KINGDOM” starts things off and sounds like it was written especially for Sharron, as was the following tune “YOU NEVER GAVE UP ON ME”. The country flavor of “SOME GOOD NEWS” picks the pace up just a bit and is the first of three tunes written by Sharron.
Fitting Sharron like a glove, she flawlessly performs the Dolly Parton classic, “COAT OF MANY COLORS” before moving on to the remaining two songs Sharron penned, the highly progressive (for Sharron anyway) “THERE’S STILL HOPE IN THE CROSS” which features the voices Paul Lancaster along with Jimmy Fortune, Mike Allen and Les Butler and the heartfelt song of submission, “I’D WALK THIS VALLEY AGAIN”.
The true triumph of the recording is the power ballad, “WHEN I SAY CHRISTIAN”, penned by Daryl Mosley (the same gentleman who penned the hit song “He Saw it All” by the Booth Brothers), and is just one of three tunes penned by Mosley. This is a powerful song emphasizing that calling ourselves “Christian” isn’t saying anything great on our behalf, other than it is all about a great God. Sharron is joined by Country/Bluegrass legend, Marty Raybon and they perform the song magnificently. Marty also joins Sharron on the title song, “I’LL TAKE THE ROAD I KNOW”. Recorded 20 years ago by the Spencers, it was great seeing this song revived in such a way that only Sharron could do.
Picking up the pace, Sharron does the classic tune, “OH I WANT TO SEE HIM” in a nice bluegrass/acoustical arrangement before closing things out with the medium tempo, “EVERYTHING HEAVEN WON’T BE”.
Sharron has grown so much as an artist since her last release. While Sharron does allow herself to expand her musical horizons with this recording, she does not stray at all from who she is. Sharron has a certain “down-homeness” about her and when you listen to her sing, you feel like your listening to an old friend. She has that believability factor, which I consider the highest compliment you can pay a singer…Sharron is a rare breed of singers who sing with such heart and passion that you can’t help but believe what she is singing about and declare, ”Yes Sharron…I believe you!”
Personal Favs: THE LEAST ONE IN THE KINGDOM; THERE’S STILL HOPE IN THE CROSS; I’D WALK THIS VALLEY AGAIN; WHEN I SAY CHRISTIAN; I’LL TAKE THE ROAD I
KNOW; EVERYTHING HEAVEN WON’T
