It is the opinion of this writer, that there are few singers that sing as sweetly and angelically as the Ruppes. They are known for intricate arrangements, soaring harmonies and precision singing. While they dabble on the progressive end of the musical spectrum often, they have always remained true to themselves and have consistently put out great music. This latest endeavor will, I think, please those who long for the more traditional side of the Ruppes. "Sweet Forever" takes you back to the early days of the Ruppes to a more unadulterated sound. This is the sound that may have drawn many people to them back when they first hit it big with "Under His Wings" and "Angels in the Room." Now, even with the more laid back approach to this recording, there is still plenty of the more progressive styles that the group is known for. It's a very well rounded recording and very true to who they are as artists.
The uptempo, "GIVE US THIS DAY" starts the recording off, as we should start each day with, a simple prayer…"Give us this day our daily bread, fresh manna from Heaven…speak to us we pray…give us this day."
Heather sings the worshipful, "I'LL PRAISE YOU WITH MY HEART", which speaks of those times when simple words of praise or words of thanks just isn't enough and the song showcases the impeccable harmony that the Ruppes are known for.
Written by Marty Funderburk and Sheri LaFontaine, the easy feel of "TAKE IT FROM ONE WHO KNOWS" leads into the country-tinged uptempo "GOD DID IT". I wouldn't be a bit surprised to see this song hit radio in 2006.
Brenda Ruppe has created a niche for herself by singing those emotional power ballads, and "THE HEALER" is probably her greatest song since "Under His Wings." Complete with a bridge of the chorus of the classic, "Rise and Be Healed", the song is a masterpiece and is the biggest highlight on the recording for me, and Brenda performs the song flawlessly.
Featuring Valerie, "ARE YOU READY TO FLY" is a fun uptempo song and leads into Heather's performance of a new song with an old title penned by Geron Davis called, "AMAZING GRACE", which also features Valerie on the second verse.
Sheri LaFontaine writes and Heather sings, "WHAT A BEAUTIFUL DAY" which is a fun, upbeat funk infested tune, while "STANDING IN THE PRESENCE OF THE KING", penned by Gerald Crabb and Gina Vera, is a song reminding us, what a privilege it is to be a child of the King because we have access to the throne room anytime we need it.
The current single from this recording is "SOME THINGS NEVER CHANGE". Written by Greg Day and Steve Hurte, the song is about as Southern Gospel as they come and has a strong message that a lot of people can relate to. Closing out the recording is an honest and sincere song of our reliance on the Lord called, "I CAN'T LIVE WITHOUT YOU", and features an exceptional performance by Brenda.
The Ruppes are first class singers. Ironically, while I am glad to see them taking a more "Southern" approach with this recording, I still rank "Free" (their most progressive undertaking) as their best piece of work and my personal favorite. But, this is a superb offering. Excellent songs, superior vocals and slick music tracks make this a truly exceptional piece of work.
