Sandy Knight is a songwriter who first came on the scene over 20 years ago when Gold City recorded and took to #1 her song, “I Think I'll Read it Again.” Since then, Sandy's music has constantly found a place in the Southern Gospel community with songs such as “Little David”, “John Saw”, “The Next Cloud”, “Somebody Touched the Lord”, “Shouting Ground”, “Looking to Live”, “I'll Not Turn my Back on Him Now” and “God's Building a Church”. All the while her songs were being recorded by multitudes of other artists, I have been following the group she has with her husband, the Roy Knight Singers, since the mid 1980s. Though the group itself hasn't made much of an impact chart-wise, they are as solid as they come.

The easy flowing “THEN PRAYER TOOK PLACE” starts the recording off and then moves on to the reflective “DEALING WITH GOLD”, which compares how we deal with things here in this life and how essentially, we will deal with living in a land of no troubles.

The pace finally picks up with the jazzy, “LET'S GO TO CHURCH” (which Ivan Parker just recently recorded) before slowing back down once again for the worshipful, “THINE ANOINTING” , as Roy and Sandy Knight's daughter Tracie, turns in an exceptional performance.

Starting off slow, “GOD'S UP TO SOMETHING GOOD” quickly picks the pace up with this bouncy number before slowing back down for the country feel of, “WITHOUT THE MAN”. I love the fiddle and steel guitar playing harmony with each other on the song. Tracie's husband, Rodney Birch, turns in an excellent delivery of the song before turning the mic over to Sandy Knight as she sings the first verse of the plaintive, “THE ANGELS WERE SILENT”.

“I KNEW IT WAS HIS TOUCH” in my opinion is a masterpiece. The sheer delivery and power that Tracie and Rodney sing this song is absolutely captivating. To come through a place where God seemed so far away and then experience His touch, you can sing along, “Then I knew the joy, that replaced the pain, and then I knew forgiveness as He called out my name, and I knew for me, my life He had restored, and I'll say this much, I knew it was His touch.” What a great testimony in song!

Recently recorded by the Inspirations, the group sings their version of “IN A TWINKLE OF AN EYE” and it is very good, as is the soothing, “IN THE CALM” . The tempo picks up for the bouncy bluegrass tinged, “HE LED ME OUT TO LEAD ME IN”.

Sandy Knight could write about a cloud and make a hit song out of it. (Oh wait…she already HAS done that!) Sandy took the subject of the news network CNN, and made it into a song called “LISTEN LIVE ON CNN”, and is most enjoyable with a very timely message. I've never been much on novelty songs, but this one is pretty good!

The medium tempo, “DON'T LOOK AT THE STORM” is a song I can hear the McKameys or Inspirations taking a hold of and running with. Closing out the recording is the perennial children's favorite “JESUS LOVES ME”.

Of the 14 songs on this recording, Sandy wrote 10 of them. I have to say that aside from Sandy's great skill as a singer/songwriter, the next best thing about this group are the vocal talents of Rodney and Tracie Birch. Keep an eye and ear on these two as they have awesome abilities as singers and as songwriters. I have always enjoyed the Roy Knight Singers' music; they have a campmeeting feel about it that I find most appealing. If you've never had the chance to listen to this group, this recording is a good introduction.

Personal Favs: THEN PRAYER TOOK PLACE; THINE ANOINTING; WITHOUT THE MAN; I KNEW IT WAS HIS TOUCH; IN A TWINKLE OF AN EYE; LISTEN LIVE ON CNN

Great review James. You summed it up pretty well.

One day I saw Sandy Knight walking by my office carrying her guitar case and I remember thinking, or perhaps even saying out loud, "Dottie Rambo watch out!"
Sandy is cut from the same cloth when it comes to crafting songs.
They are a wonderful family, too. We're blessed to have the Knight's at Crossroads.
Thanks for covering their project so nicely.

PS - The current Kingsmen radio hit "You Keep Praying" is one of Sandy's. It's touching people in a powerful way.
