The simple mountain style of the Primitive Quartet has resounded in the hearts of thousands of people for over 30 years. While my appreciation for their music is wide, my enjoyment of it is much smaller. Having never claimed to be a fan of bluegrass, I still find a way to enjoy a few artists who lean to this style, the Primitive Quartet being one of them. This latest recording continues what they started many years ago and sticks to what has worked for them all these years.

The uptempo, "THE JOY OF HEAVEN IS MINE" starts the recording off before moving on a wonderful testimony in song written and sung by Reagan Riddle, "YOU'VE HELPED ME THROUGH MY VALLEY". Randy Fox is featured on the title song, "WHO ROLLED THE STONE AWAY" while Jeff Tolbert gets the featured spot on my personal favorite from this recording "HE'S BEEN SO GRACIOUS TO ME". "WE SHALL SLEEP, BUT NOT FOREVER" is a song that's so old, it's almost new and it's great to hear the Primitive Quartet revive this great old song.

The next four songs were all penned by Reagan, and are some of his best offerings. Those songs include the uptempo, "OH, LET ME TELL YOU WHAT HE'S DONE FOR ME", the medium tempo "GOD'S MERCY AND GRACE", the jubilant "LET THE BLOOD OF CALVARY SPEAK FOR ME" (which features Norman Wilson) and the sentimental, "WE DIDN'T HAVE MUCH, BUT WE HAD PLENTY" (a song typical for the Primitives music).

Closing out the recording is the old quartet standard, "WHEN HE CALLS ME, I'LL FLY AWAY" and the Primitives do a good job with their rendition of the song.

I have followed the Primitives from a distance for about as long as I can remember. While bluegrass isn't my forte', I still appreciate the many contributions the Primitive Quartet have made to Southern Gospel Music, and I have the utmost respect for them as singers and musicians and as Christian men. Unless you are a fan of this style, this recording will probably not win you over. But for the fans of the Primitive Quartet, this is another recording filled with great songs to add to your collection.

Personal Favs: YOU'VE HELPED ME THROUGH MY VALLEY; YOU'VE BEEN SO GRACIOUS TO ME; WE SHALL SLEEP, BUT NOT FOREVER; LET THE BLOOD OF CALVARY SPEAK FOR ME

I bought this cd for my Papa's birthday and it is really good.I saw them perform a few weeks ago,and I immediately fell in love with "He's Been So Gracious to Me".I like Bluegrass Music, but not like Traditional Southern Gospel.Anyways, this cd is a very good album, and I would refer this to Primitive Quartet fans.
