Talk about going out with a bang! It is bittersweet that this is Poet Voices final recording, as they leave us with the best recording they have ever done. The vocals and tracks are brilliantly done and they are coupled with an exceptional mix of songs ranging from all different tempos and styles. This is truly quartet singing at its finest!
Borrowing the lyrics from a song called “The Power of a Song” which Phil Cross wrote on Poet Voices first recording, he wrote a brand new chorus and the song “SING ME A SONG” was born. This is an excellent opener for the CD.
“NOBODY KNOWS BUT THE LORD” shows off some really neat harmony and some real mellow singing, done as only Poet Voices can do. This song sounds reminiscent to something Lena Horne would do if she sang gospel. Very smooth!
This was my first opportunity to hear Scott Inman sing, and what a smooth voice he has. He has a certain amount of emotion and depth in his voice, and I think it shines through on “LOOK TO GOD.” This song has made me a Scott Inman fan.
“PUT MY HAND IN HIS HAND” (which shows off some fine bass singing by Tim Duncan) and “EVERY WORD IN THE WORD” (which has a really cool music track and would make an excellent single) are two highly enjoyable up-tempo songs that you will find yourself listening to over and over again. Both have solid messages and showcase some great quartet singing.
Following a similar pattern as former hit “I Am Redeemed”, complete with it’s own recitation, “HE HAD TO BE” will do well for the group. I really like what this song says, and never really thought of it this way…"He had to be hungry, He to cry, He had to homeless, He had to die, He had to be broken, He had to fall, He had to be poor, so we could be sure He would come to all.” Interesting concept!
With the backdrop of the old hymn “I Surrender All”, Tim admirably sings “MORE OF ME.” What a humbling thought, “…that it’s not that I need more of God, but He needs more of me.”
The title song “TURN TO THE ONE,” offers some really sound, Biblical advice to look to the One who has the answer and not everywhere else. Coupled with a strong beat, this song will definitely cause the feet to tap.
Dale Brock does a tremendous job in singing “HOLD ON.” With its big sound and encouraging message, this song will surely become a favorite of many people…"Hold on…through every storm, hold on…even in the darkest night, walk by faith and not sight…hold on!”
Closing things out with an almost choral type sound, and the verses literally taken from Scripture (John 14:1-3 and 1 Corinthians 15-51-58), “EVEN SO, COME QUICKLY” brings the CD to a rousing close.
It is sad this is the last CD for Poet Voices. They ended with a bang and with a CD to really be proud of. Some of the most solid singing these guys have done since their early days are found here, and I hate to see them go. Kind of like the old saying…all good things must come to an end. If there must be an end, I am glad it ends as superbly as this!
