I first heard the Perrys on radio back in the mid and late 1980s with such songs as "Dig a Little Deeper", "Get Involved", "There Has Never Been", "We Shall Reign" and "I Remember the Day". Each song drew me more and more into what they were doing and before long, I was a big, big fan. Since the restructure a few years ago, they have really molded into one of the most solid, vocally exciting mixed groups to ever grace a stage. "Come Thirsty" really showcases some stellar vocals, as well as some really cool music tracks. Though there are some big orchestral tracks, they are not overdone, and really compliment what the Perrys are doing vocally.

The big band feel of the fun infested tune, "UNTIL THE LAST ONE IS HOME", penned by songwriting duo Wayne Haun and Joel Lindsey starts things off on the right foot and leads right into the Kyla Rowland penned, "STILL THRILLED". Featuring Libby (Still Amazed, Still Blessed and now Still Thrilled) Stuffle and a strong "Goodman" sound, this is one of the highlights of the recording, as is another "Goodman" sounding tune, "A DAY THAT NEVER ENDS", which was written by Gerald Crabb.

Penned by Kyla Rowland (where does she find these great songs?), "HE WILL HIDE ME" is the big power ballad for this recording, and will no doubt land the Perrys a #1 song this year. Powerful performances filled with conviction and a huge orchestral track makes this possibly one of their most memorable performances in their career. Libby then takes the lead on another powerful tune titled, "WALK AWAY FREE".

Penned by songwriting team Joseph Habadenk and Matthew Holt, "WHEN JESUS PRAYS", features an excellent performance by Joseph and is one of the strongest tunes on this recording, while the title song, "COME THIRSTY", which features Tracy, seems to be the weakest. (Which is no reflection at all on Tracy).

The pace finally kicks back into high gear with yet another Rowland tune, "THEY SANG A HYMN" and I would strongly consider this as a possible radio song, which features a smokin' music track as well. Featuring Loren (who is arguably the best lead singer out there today) and a strong orchestral track, the medium tempo "WHY TROUBLE THE MASTER?", written by Jeff Steele and Daryl Williams, is a unique song offering hope in a God who hears our cries and answers our pleas.

If the highly energetic, "HE FORGOT", is any indication of the stuff songwriting duo Habadenk & Holt will come out with in the future, then they need to stick together and patent their names because these guys will be a force to be reckoned with. The Perrys have a great songwriting team within the group and this should bode very well for them in the future.

Libby closes out the recording with a song that is completely her own. Though slightly different for the Perrys, the thought provoking "I WANNA BE MARY FOR AWHILE" worked extremely well for Libby and she does a remarkable job getting the message across; a message that a lot of men, not just women, could tuck in their spirits as well.

Quite honestly, I believe this is the best recording the Perrys have done since their vocal restructure a few years ago, and it definitely raises the bar for them. The music tracks and vocals are superb and the song selection is outstanding as well. They stick with what has worked for them and they use the songwriters and types of songs that fit them, but they still manage to stretch themselves. Also, I must add that I love the concept for the cover. I love me some good old-fashioned sweet ice tea, and I love me some Perrys! So if you're thirsty for some great Southern Gospel Music, look no further than right here!

Personal Favs: STILL THRILLED; A DAY THAT NEVER ENDS; HE WILL HIDE ME; WALK AWAY FREE; THEY SANG A HYMN; HE FORGOT; I WANNA BE MARY FOR A WHILE

I don't normally weigh on these kinds of things but here goes. I tend to agree with Chris and Jimmy. I personally LOVE the Perrys. There's never been a better "fast" southern gospel song than "I Wish I Coulda Been There". But the current album left me wanting a little more. The record sounds amazing but it didn't contain a collection of songs that stuck with me. However, the collection might be for someone else...who knows?

In reference to the Perrys not changing their sound...let's not forget a few years ago when their sound leaned a little more "UPC Sounding" rather than straight-ahead traditional Southern Gospel. Their sound is MUCH different now than it was when Nicole Watts Jenkins and David Hill/Mike Bowling were there. Every group reinvents their sound from time to time and there's nothing wrong with that. A reinvention was not suggested just some "surprises". That's why there are 10-12 songs on a CD...hopefully so there will be something for everyone.

The Perrys are some of my favorite people...and I wish them the best!

I thought this was a nice overall recording by the Perrys. Joseph Habedank is really coming into his own vocally, and that was a highlight of this record for me. I thought far & away the best 3 songs were "He Will Hide Me", "Why Trouble The Master?" (which was the best song) and "He Forgot". I find myself humming "He Forgot" quite frequently.

James Hales's avatar Here’s some of 2 cents worth on some of the comments, and I want to say I appreciate them all…

While I appreciate artists who do boldly go where no artist has gone before and think “outside the box”, not every group or artist is meant to go that route. The Perrys have made a solid name for themselves and they do what they do better than just about any other mixed group out there. (that’s hard for me to say, being the HUGE Hoppers fan that I am…but props are props, and I gotta give it to the Perrys). This is the best recording they have ever recorded in their career…musically and lyrically. AND, by my own assumptions, they did go outside the box with “I Wanna Be Mary for Awhile.” That song alone was completely different than anything they’ve ever done and it worked for them too. The Perrys are as solid as they come, and they haven’t been on top the last couple of years by being in a rut. They fans approve of what they have heard, and the Perrys could do it again this year.

Just because they didn’t make any bold musical statements with this recording doesn’t mean it’s not a 5 star. By our reviewing standard, a 5 star is a true masterpiece, and I believe with everything that is in me, that this is such a recording.

Again - I'm not asking that the Perrys be the Crabb Family stylistically. I just want them to branch out a little bit like they were willing to do during their Nicole Watts-Jenkins days.

And in regards to this album being a masterpiece? Sorry James - I just don't hear it. Good - yes. Great even - yes. Masterpiece? I dunno about that.

In the Perrys vs. Mike Bowling Group/James Hales vs. Chris Unthank debate I have to agree with NEITHER. I don't think the Perrys nor Mike Bowling Group deserved a Five Star/Masterpiece rating.

Very well said, James.

The only thing I will say here is that each group knows their own audience. A true professinal will know how far they can go with their music before they start losing people/fans. And when the group mistakes what the audience wants is when they are in trouble. I have seen group after group fall on their face because of this. They want to try new things and be more progressive at the cost of losing fans. The argument is always, "but they can gain new fans." That is true. But will they gain as many as they lose? It is a gamble.

Who better than the Perrys knows how far they can go with their music? The Perrys are truly talented. Not just vocally, but the way they connect with each audience night after night.

The Perrys have been very special to me and my family! I am in full support of their ministry!

By the way, we are having them in our summer sing this weekend! Satuday, July 8th at Robinson Middle School in Kingsport, TN. It is The Perrys, Mark Bishop, Brothers Forever and Tony McGee & New Covenant (hosts). For those of you close, come and be with us!

James Hales's avatar Chris...I never said that you said the Perrys needed to be more like the Crabb Family stylistically. I never even mentioned the Crabb Family. You can be progressive and be outside of the box and not even remotely sound like the Crabbs, but that is beside the point.

The Perrys are one of the most solid, consistent, and classiest groups out there. They know what they want, they know what their fans want and they give it to them. And they do it flawlessly, in my humble opinion.

In my last 2 reviews of the Perrys on their "Life of Love" and "Remembering the Goodmans" recordings, I gave them both 4 1/2 stars. This is by far, over and above those two works, and I felt with everything in me, it was every bit worthy of 5 stars.

I respect all of these opinions...don't agree with them all, but respect them all just the same. I appreciate the comments, if anything it will cause people to go out and buy it to find out for themselves! grin
