This newest release from Palmetto State will most likely be one of the most talked about quartet releases for 2004. If there were an award for “Upbeat Album of the Year”, this would be it. There is not a single slow song or ballad on the recording. Everything is either upbeat or at the slowest, slightly slow-medium tempo. Highly stimulating and spiritually uplifting, this recording will be regarded, as Palmetto State at it’s best!
From the slick horn arrangements to the solid quartet singing, ”KNOCK, KNOCK, KNOCK“ is probably the song you’ll remember most from this recording as it is full of energy and features some great singing, but the great music doesn’t end there. Slowing things down a bit to a slow-medium shuffle, is the next song entitled ”HOLD ON“, written by Mosie Lister and featuring Kerry Beatty. As we keep with that medium tempo, the following song ”AS FOR ME AND MY HOUSE“, features a slight country sound and has all the makings of a great single.
One of my all time favorite songs is the oldie goldie ”THAT’S ENOUGH“ made popular by Jake Hess in the mid 60s. Tony Peace does not disappoint with this arrangement and John Rulapaugh throws in some Rosie Rozell vocal licks near the end making the song all the more enjoyable and it leads right into ”I’M ON MY WAY“.
Excellent quartet sounds abound on the highly enjoyable ”I’D RATHER BE PRAISIN‘“. I must confess I really enjoy this song, as well as the medium tempo ”WE’LL MEET AGAIN“ which features Tony and John. John really puts a shine on the jazzy ”I LOVE THE CITY“ penned by Sandi Knight. Rosie Rozell would have been proud!
The up tempo ”ON TIME GOD“ leads right into the Kyla Rowland penned tune entitled, ”OH THAT WONDERFUL PROMISE.” Previously recorded by the Perrys, Palmetto State adds a male quartet flare to the song and does a fine job. The final song entitled ”HE’LL SETTLE IT ALL“ ends the recording on a high note.
One surprise to me was how little Aaron McCune is featured on this recording. I would have figured they would have given him a big feature song; but only a couple words or lines here and there feature Aaron. My first thought is that with him being so new to the group, they decided against featuring him much until the next recording. With that aside, like I said earlier, this is the best recording Palmetto State has ever done. Vibrant and highly spirited is the best way to describe this recording. Quartet lovers near and far will definitely dive into this one!
