Oak Ridge Boys - An Inconvenient Christmas
Well, they have done it again. The Oak Ridge Boys have teamed with Spring Hill to create a fantastic CD. This time it’s Christmas. Time has taken nothing away from the feeling that these guys sing with. This CD combines a couple of secular based song with a strong spiritual influence. The standard Christmas carols “It Came Upon A Midnight Clear” and “Beautiful Star Of Bethlehem” bring back that old time feeling of Christmas, sitting at the church singing with everybody and really enjoying it. “Winter Wonderland” and “The Christmas Song” remind you of all the fun of those days prior to Christmas day when you are out there shopping and getting into the Christmas and giving spirit. Christmas is always such a special time between you and that very special person in your life, and Duane Allen sings this love song with such warmth that I wanted to tell my wife that “A Christmas Love Song” is just how I feel about her. Joe Bonsall really brings your mind to the true spirit of Christmas with a beautiful ballad in “My Son, My Son”. Joe is featured again on the title song which is a light hearted message about the first Christmas and all the others that have followed. “An Inconvenient Christmas” tells the Christmas story in a very peculiar, but touching way. The velvety smooth Bass voice of Richard Sterban gives “The Christmas Song” real depth and feeling. “Beneath The Christmas Tree” will bring a tear to your eyes as Duane shares this story in song with you. The harmonies on the chorus are simply fantastic. Bill Golden is featured on “Just A Simple Christmas Song” which gives you a very warm Christmas wish. This CD closes out with as dynamic a rendition of “The Hallelujah Chorus” as I have ever heard. This one will give you those “glory” bumps as you listen to it. This is one Christmas CD that I highly recommend getting.

THE OAKRIDGE BOYS HAVE A KNACK FOR FOLLOWING MONEY. THE DESERTED GOSPEL MUSIC FOR COUNTRY MUSIC WHEN THAT WAS CHIC. NOW THAT THE GREATEST GAINS IN SALES OF MUSIC IS IN GOSPEL THEY REAPPEAR. GO FIGURE. I HOPE THEIR DESIRE IS SINCERE.

JL, I am curious as to where you received your information that the greatest gains in music sales were in Gospel music. From 35 years in Southern Gospel music, I can tell you that the Oaks are not making more money selling Gospel CD than country. I firmly believe that the Oaks are getting older and the training of their youth is rising to their convictions again. I do feel that they are sincere in thses efforts or I would not have reviewed them.

THE GREATEST INCREASE WAS REPORTED ON GMT. IT WAS REPORTED THAT THE LARGEST PERCENTAGE INCREASE WAS IN GOSPEL MUSIC AT 13%VERSUS DECLINING PERCENTAGE IN MOST OTHERS. I DIDN'T SAY THEY WERE MAKING MORE ON GOSPEL. I SAID THEY HAD A KNACK FOR FOLLOWING THE MONEY. I DO HOPE AND PRAY THEY ARE SINCERE. I AM NOT BEING JUDGING. I DO SUPPOSE THEY WERE REVIEWED BECAUSE OF THEIR POPULARITY.

A 13% increase in sales was most likely due to the 911 Tragedy and the fact that more people were buying gospel music. But even at that I doubt the Oak Ridge Boys figured that 13% increase over the last year was enough to convince them that recording gospel music was going where the money is.
Don't buy the music if you don't like it, but why try to spoil it for those who do like the music? Some people............

I WOULD LIKE TO APOLOGISE TO ANY WHO WERE OFFENDED BY MY THOUGHTS. AFTER MUCH SOUL SEARCHING I HAVE REALIZED THAT I WAS NOT CHRISTLIKE EXPRESSING MY THOUGHTS. I SUPPOSE THAT MY EXCITEMENT OVER THE ENTHUSIASIM GOING ON IN SOUTHERN GOSPEL MUSIC CAUSED ME TO BE BLIND TO THE FACT THAT CHRIST WOULD WELCOME BACK THE OAKS, AS HE HAS ME MANY TIMES. THANKS J.L.

This is one of the best Christmas recordings to come along in several years. Also, the Oaks gospel CD "From the Heart" is one of the best quartet recordings to come along in several years. Excellent.

The album is solid.
Some may not realize this is the ORB's second project on SpringHill, with the third one, "Colors", being released on 5/20/03. Mr. Davis, your comments in 12/02 need to be addressed. Jesus Christ has his arms open for any of us. Ain't that what it's all about? But frankly, I do not know how you or any other person can know the individual heart of any Oak. Only God knows. I am one one who believes one can sing music other than SGM and be a Christian. Ricky Skaggs and many others are examples. Mr. Davis, your comments remind me of the early 1970's all over again. Bottom Line: Have you listened to this project? If so, comment on it. Thanks so much.
