Next Chapter Quartet’s freshman release, “Just Relax,” is just starting to get some radio play with their first national release, “All Heaven Broke Loose.” Surprisingly they have a new project entitled, “Pieces of the Past” slated to release late this summer. I guess these guys like to record! Their radio release, starts off the disk followed by the stronger tune, “Take Another Look at the Cross.” The title cut, “Just Relax” is probably my least favorite song on the project. Not at all their best sound. Pitch issues have me worried that this is going to be a rough review, but this perk back up with “You Did it Anyway,” written by Rebecca J. Peck and Rhonda Jo Conner. Lead singer and co-producer Jason Tapley does some of his best vocal work on this song, making it the first song to stand out on this traditional sounding album.
Things continue in the right direction with a switch up on the lead. Tenor, Nick Cummings takes a turn with the catchy tune, “Blessing Burden Bearing God.” Followed by my favorite song on the record, “Faithful is Your Name.” However, it is NOT my favorite because of the vocals but rather the lyrics and instrumentation. The group blend sounds the best on this tune, but the features are less than impressive and pitch problems prevail after the key change, leading me to believe it was perhaps a touch out of reach. “Walls Come Down,” another Rebecca J. Peck song, written with Twila LaBar pull the guys up vocally, and features bass singer, Daniel Byers. This is the kind of song that they sound best on. I enjoyed the vocal arrangement on this tune.
Perhaps the best vocal on the record is by baritone, Terry Chapman singing “I will Keep my Eyes on the Cross.” It’s another strong ballad, and I have to give the guys credit for picking such great songs! The album finishes with “Home in the Sky,” a Bud Atkinson song that you’ll find yourself singing, and “I’m Excited” which gives the quartet a touch of soul. Overall I heard a lot of potential in these guys. They have great taste in songs, their arrangements were more than just predictable, and when they really mesh they sound great. However because of some questionable pitches and timing issues I’m leaving them plenty of room to grow. I look forward to hearing the new project to see how much they’ve progressed already.
