I have always said that Naomi is one of the classiest ladies in Southern Gospel Music. She exudes all things that are lovely and wonderful. Her voice is one of the most recognizable voices in the industry and her living legacy speaks for itself. After nearly 50 years of traveling and singing, one would think she'd slow down, but Naomi has put together a group, consisting of Kasey Kemp and Caleb Cowan, that exceeds several of the aggregations of the Segos from the past.
The recording begins with 3 medium to slow tempo songs, “ALMOST HOME” (the group's current single) , “I'VE BEEN REDEEMED” and “THERE'LL BE JOY” and we don't kick things into high gear until we come to a revived favorite from the early 1980's entitled, “SAIL ON OVER” and an Albert E. Brumley classic, “I'M BOUND FOR THE LAND OF CANAAN”. Both songs showcase some nice guitar work by former Karen Peck & New River guitarist, Joel Key.
Naomi turns in an excellent performance on the jubilant “HE'S ALIVE” before we come to the driving tempo of “THERE IS JOY IN SERVING JESUS”, which is one of the highlight of the recording for me. This song was pretty popular back several years ago when the Kingsmen recorded it in 1976, and it is great to see the Segos revive this long lost song.
Back in the mid to late 1960's, the group popularized a song written by W.R Sego called, “THE JOKE”, and the group of today dusted the song off and breathed new life into it. Though I much prefer the original version, Kasey does well with this classic novelty tune.
Caleb does a great job on “I'LL MAKE IT THROUGH THE STORM” before the recording closes with the popular Kyla Rowland penned tune, “A PLACE TO SPEND THE NIGHT”.
There really aren't any surprises here as the group treads musical territory that is very familiar to them. But this is Naomi, as we've always known her. All through the years, the Segos have never been one to push the envelope musically. To this day, they still have that same old-fashioned campmeeting feel they've always had in their music and that essentially is part of their charm and why I have always loved their music. If you're a fan of the Segos, you'll definitely love this recording.
