Naomi Sego is a legend; a classy one at that! This release celebrates 45 years of excellence from one of the most recognized names in Southern Gospel Music. It's hard to imagine that 45 years ago, one lady stepped up to the microphone and forever molded this group's sound into one that is distinctively all their own. Naomi and the Segos has a sound so unique, that with only a few notes, you know exactly who it is. With class, dignity and humility, Naomi has made her mark.
The video starts off with vintage footage of the Sego Brothers and Naomi singing their classic song, “MY HEAVENLY HOME” and then moves on to the group of today as they sing another classic, “BORN TO SERVE THE LORD”.
“IS MY LORD SATISFIED WITH ME” begins with footage of the original group and then quickly jumps to the current group on the second verse. One of my favorite Sego songs is “WHEN WE LAY OUR BURDEN'S DOWN” , and here we find more vintage footage of the original group. We are also treated with some live concert footage of the group in the late 1980's singing, “WHERE THE ROSES NEVER FADE.”
On this 2-volume set, we delight in finding many familiar songs that the Sego's have made famous in their rich 45-year history. The group of today performs such hits from the 1950's and 1960's like “SILVER AND GOLD”, “SORRY, I NEVER KNEW YOU”, “HE IS MINE, I AM HIS” and “HE WASHED MY SOUL” , as well as some of their best known songs from the 1970's such as, “WHEN THE MASTER COMES AFTER HIS BRIDE”, “THIS IS JUST WHAT HEAVEN MEANS TO ME”, “TELL ME HIS NAME AGAIN”, “HALLELUJAH SQUARE”, “ONE DAY AT A TIME” and “PLEASE SEARCH THE BOOK AGAIN”.
Other songs include “I'LL PUT ON A CROWN”, “THERE'S GONNA BE SHOUTING” and Naomi's most recent hit song, “SEEDS I HAVE SOWN” (which features a wonderful video montage of Naomi down through the years.)
Each CD contains a bonus cut that is not included on the videos. Those songs are “OUT OF THE DUST” and “THE HEM OF HIS GARMET.”
All in all, this is a good set to have in your collection, especially if you're like me who treasures the heritage of Southern Gospel Music. I don't understand though, why this was released in two volumes, because it all could have very easily fit on one video and one CD. I was also disappointed in the overall quality of the package as well. A couple of bad camera shots on the video and a couple of places with bad editing on both the video and CD make this a mediocre recording at best. I also can only imagine how hard it was for them to sing on that set with all those balloons and confetti on the floor!
I do realize though, that this wasn't intended for release, because if I am not mistaken, it was actually filmed at a telethon for a TV station. Nonetheless, it has its issues. But, the vintage footage of the group and the video montage of the group and Naomi are worth getting this 2-volume collection. Plus, the current group does very well performing these timeless classics, despite the balloons and confetti!
