Naomi “Hap” Edwards - What Kind of Love
Label: Independent
Producer: Jason Rooks
Spring, TX is the home of Naomi “Hap” Edwards. This traditional country gospel artist has produced a new project, What Kind of Love. The title song is a mid tempo song and immediately reminds me of older Loretta Lynn and Connie Smith albums. “Build a Hedge around My Children” keeps the tempo the same.
“Heaven” is a more traditional Southern Gospel song. It is done in three quarter time and reminds me of the old song, “The Lights of Home”. “I’m Thirsty” gets the foot tappin’. There are phrases in this song when it’s seems that Naomi is pushing her range a little.
“The Rock” slows the tempo back down. Melodically it sounds a little like “I Believe in a Hill Called Mt. Calvary”.
“When the Waters Are Troubled” takes us back to a country shuffle which seems to be the style that best suits her vocally. “Sitting at His Feet” is more of the same. “I See Jesus” slows the tempo down again. There are some definite pitch issues on this one.
She closes the album out with “Rivers of Mercy” and “He Is There”.
Naomi has a pleasant voice that is listenable. Her songs are just o.k. There are just too many songs on the project that sound alike. The messages of the songs are good and biblically strong but the tunes are very predictable.
