Monty Milikin is a name I have only become familiar just recently. First as a songwriter (the McKameys took his song, "I Am Home" to #1 in December 2005) and now as a singer. As far as I know, this is first solo effort, and it's not bad at all.
The rollicking, guitar infested "HE'S MY EVERYTHING" gets things started and the song really is a good introduction to the music of Monty Milikin, as a songwriter and a singer. Monty then turns in his own rendition of the GT (Dad) Speer classic, "HEAVEN'S JUBILEE" (one of the four tunes Monty did not pen). Other classics include "WE'LL UNDERSTAND IT BETTER BY AND BY" (which mirrors Mike Bowling's rendition from a few years ago), "I WOULDN'T TAKE NOTHING FOR MY JOURNEY NOW" and "IT IS NO SECRET".
Monty proves to be a decent songwriter as he penned 7 tunes on this recording. The remaining 6 songs include "MERCY SAID NO", "YOU'LL NEVER THIRST AGAIN", "THE SON IN MY EYES", "CALVARY CAME THROUGH AGAIN", "MY STORY" and "GET UP".
Monty's vocal and musical style could be compared to that of Michael Comb's, though not quite as charismatic in nature, and quite a bit easier on the ears. Mix in a little Quinton Mills, and you've got Monty Milikin. Boasting a definitive country feel, the music of Monty Milikin is one that probably a lot of people can relate to. The overall quality of the recording is very good, and the songwriting is pretty good as well. I think with time Monty will continue to build on the talent he has. He doesn't have a bad resume with the McKameys recording and charting his tune, "I Am Home", so he definitely has a good foundation. While his style isn't exactly my cup of tea, I realize there is an audience for his style and they will no doubt immensely enjoy his music.
