Replete with enough pictures of Kirk looking like he’s doing a Nautica© commercial, Net Breaking, Boat Sinking, Bountiful Blessings takes it’s place in the continuous parade of great project by Kirk Talley. When I first heard of the title, my eyes rolled. But then I thought, this is the guy who also put out a project titled “Shhh!” Only Kirk!
Although Kirk is one of the outstanding songwriters in Southern Gospel Music, he only had a part in writing three of the songs on this project. He co-wrote “The Road You’re Taking” and “Under The Ocean Floor” with Rodney Griffin. You may have already heard, “Under The Ocean Floor,” it’s the first release to radio from the project. The rest are quality works from the pen of well known writers like Daryl Williams, Dean and Mary Brown (Net Breaking, Boat Sinking, Bountiful Blessings, Out Loud and On Purpose, Got To Get A God Said), Phil Cross (In The Cross Of Jesus Christ, When God Says No), Babbie Mason and Alvin Slaughter (A Servant’s Prayer), Phil Johnson and Aaron Wilburn (The Word Is Mercy).
From the first rap of the drum, the sawing of the fiddle and the driving guitar licks of the title song, “Net Breaking, Boat Sinking, Bountiful Blessings” to the high praise of “A Servant’s Prayer”, there’s something here for everyone. Kirk also has a new “whistling” song. While there are some lighthearted songs, the majority of the material in this project has some of the strongest lyrics, Scripturally, and some of the most powerful, intense Worship I’ve heard on a Southern Gospel project in a long time.
My personal picks are “Under The Ocean Floor,” “Got To Get A God Said”, “A Servant’s Prayer”, and “The Word Is Mercy.” I give the project 4 stars, and encourage you to get the project and give it a listen!
