Jeff Ferguson is a wonderful writer. Groups such as the Hoskins Family, Greenes, Taranda Greene, Hopes Call, Tony Gore, Karen Peck & New River, McRae’s, etc. have all recorded songs written or co-written by Jeff. He even co-wrote “Woman Thou Art Loosed” made popular by TD Jakes. This guy has an impressive resume! Though “Send a Little Rain” is not his first effort as a soloist, it was my first introduction to his singing and ministry.

The first two songs, “HALFWAY" and “SEND A LITTLE RAIN” don’t offer much variety, musically. Though very well written, they don’t have the same excitement as the versions respectively recorded by Hopes Call and Taranda Greene. It’s not until we get to the third song, “I LOVE YOUR WORD” that I think we finally hit the crux of what this recording is about musically and lyrically. As Jeff leads us into worship with this song, he quietly moves on to “IT DOESN’T MATTER WHO YOU ARE”. As Jeff and co-writer Doug Clanton so eloquently put in song, “It doesn’t matter who you are, it doesn’t matter what you’ve done"you can start all over again.” In musical contrast, we move on to the funk sounding “YOU CAN DEPEND ON JESUS”.

“FAITH MOVES GOD” is a soulful tune reminding us that it is our faith that moves the heart of God. “MIRACLE MAN” is a song that has been around for over 20 years, and it’s still a great one. Jeff does a duet with the outstanding soulful stylist, Toni Clay and they seem to have excellent chemistry together.

I do have a favorite, and “THINGS GOD CAN’T DO” is the one. A great reminder in song of how much God really does love us as the song reveals the many wonderful things that He can’t do.

Closing out the recording is a “HYMN MEDLEY” which includes the classic hymns “The Solid Rock”, “"Tis So Sweet to Trust in Jesus” and “Blessed Assurance”.

All but 3 of the 9 songs on this recording were either written or co-written by Jeff and they are all very strong songs. His style is a fusion of Southern Gospel and Praise & Worship, while pulling in some Black Gospel stylings as well. Jeff’s excellent abilities as a songwriter greatly overshadow his abilities as a singer. Jeff has an interesting quality about his voice. He has a lot of soul in his voice and definitely has the gift of leading worship, as it comes through in his music and singing.

For those who enjoy a more soulful, Praise & Worship feel to their music, they will probably thoroughly enjoy this CD. I liked it and found some wonderful songs on here.
