The last couple of years there have been several releases heralding the music of the Happy Goodman Family. The time must have come for the Hinsons and on the heels of the recent insurgence of "Hinson" music and tributes comes this latest release from New Haven Records in their "Gospel Legacy Series" honoring the Hinsons musical contributions to the Southern Gospel industry.
The recording takes a look back at the music of the Hinsons from their final recording in 1992, back to their first national release in 1971, and in that order as well. Starting off with their convention flavored, "JOY COMES IN THE MORNING", the recording weaves backwards in time through such hits as "MERCY BUILT A BRIDGE", "SOUL FILLIN' STATION", "CALL ME GONE", "TWO WINNING HANDS", "GOD'S GONNA DO THE SAME FOR YOU AND ME", "TILL THE LAND", "SHININ' IN" (I never really considered this tune to be a "huge" Hinson hit, but I digress), "THE TOUCH OF THE MASTER'S STRONG HAND", "HALLELUJAH MEETIN'", "AIN'T THAT WHAT IT'S ALL ABOUT" and the classic, "THE LIGHTHOUSE".
As with any other "Best of…" and "Greatest Hits" recording, there are always songs I feel were left off and probably should/could have been included like "The Original Superman", "He Can", "The God that Cannot Fail", "He Will Calm the Troubled Waters", "Old Time Feeling" or "Little Storefront Church", but all in all I am pretty satisfied with the line up on this recording. Hinson fans will want this because it's pure Hinson and history buffs will want it just for posterities sake. It's a jewel no doubt, and I am glad that New Haven Records continues to put out these types of recordings. I look forward to seeing what else is coming down the pike.
