Many people may consider the Greenes latest release “Glimpse of Glory” to be rather boring. Of the 13 songs included on this recording, only 4 are considered to be up-tempo or upbeat. I think in trying to get Tim back into the swing of things, the group decided to take a slower pace with this recording. There are not many songs I would consider high key. The Greenes are known for high-energy singing, whether it is a power ballad or an upbeat number, and they seem to have taken a more low-keyed approach to this recording. In listening to Tim sing, you can definitely tell he has had a very rough time the last couple of years. The physical strain on his body has taken a toll on his voice, as he sings a lot lower than he usually does and his voice sounds somewhat weak on some songs. But, he also has a lot more passion in his singing. God has touched Tim Greene, and this recording is a testament to that!
Starting things off in typical Greenes fashion, is the up tempo, “IN THE MORNING LIGHT” reminding us that no matter how dark the night, “everything’s gonna be just right in the morning light.”
One of the greatest songs ever written, I think, is the song “I CAN ONLY IMAGINE.” A gigantic hit for CCM artist Mercy Me last year, the Greenes show that the song has easily crossed-over into the Southern Gospel arena. What an awesome image of seeing Jesus face to face…"Surrounded by Your Glory, what will my heart feel, will I dance for you Jesus, or in awe of You be still, will I stand in Your Presence, or to my knees will I fall, will I sing Hallelujah, or will I be able to speak at all, I can only imagine…”
With all that Tim has been through in the last couple of years, there are several songs on this recording that reflect the struggles and triumphs during this time. Notably, such songs as “HID IN CHRIST”, “I DON’T HAVE TO KNOW” and “NEVER GIVING UP” all show how the Lord brought him through physical and emotional distress and they also show Tim’s deep faith that God has seen Him through, every step of the way.
“LAND OF EVERLASTING PEACE” reminds us that there is a place far better than this present world. In this day where it seems war and fighting is everywhere, this song says that in Heaven “…war is over, battles cease, pain is gone and no one stands alone, the night becomes an endless day, every tear is wiped away, in the land of everlasting peace.” Kind of makes you homesick don’t it?
“DO YOU WANT TO BE FORGIVEN?” featuring Tony, is a song written directly to the lost asking if you want to be forgiven from your sins. If you are one that is lost, then you have the answer. Jesus stands at the door and knocks and asks to come in, and He longs to take you in and forgive your sins. Another song that falls in a similar vein is the beckoning “COME TO JESUS.”
The Celtic sounding “ROCK AT THE DOOR” is next and features Tony as well. A tremendous message of victory is found in this song. What a joy in knowing that even a “rock at the door couldn’t hold the Rock of Ages!”
Taranda does an absolutely gorgeous job singing “FOR EVERY SIN.” It is a reassuring and comforting thought to know that the blood that Jesus shed was enough to cover every sin.
Those like myself, who love that trademark style of the Greenes, will absolutely drool over the next three songs! This is pure “Greenes Music”! The up tempo “I WILL GLORY IN THE STORY” will no doubt enthuse many, and the reprise makes the song all the more enjoyable. “GLORIOUS COVENANT OF GRACE” is one of the best songs Tim has ever written and is superbly sung by the Greenes. Finally, no Greenes recording would be complete without a power ballad and “HE HAS THE SCARS” is a song that is nothing short of a masterpiece. Written by Phil Cross, the song paints a dramatic picture of who Christ really is, and puts into perspective of who we really are…"we are the guilty, we have the stains, He is the innocence, He took the pain, His wounds tell forever who He is and who we are, we are the sinners, but He has the scars.”
This recording could very well be Tim Greene’s testimony in song. Die-hard Greenes fans like myself, will really like the recording. Casual listeners of the Greenes probably will pass it off as a boring CD. But if you look beyond the surface, this CD has a lot to offer. Personally, I would not consider this to be the Greenes greatest recording, though in many ways, maybe it is!
