Gaither Vocal Band - Best Of The Gaither Vocal Band
![]() Label: Gaither Music Group It must have been a difficult task to select tunes for a collection titled Best Of The Gaither Vocal Band . For sure, one CD certainly wouldn't cut it. Fortunately, a more for the money approach was adopted with two discs and a total of 37 selections, including four new recordings by the current group of Bill Gaither , Guy Penrod , David Phelps , and Marshall Hall . The focus is on recordings made from 1993 to the present (plus "A Few Good Men" from 1990, and "Daystar" from 1988), rather than attempting to encompass the entire 24 years of the GVB. A third of the collection comes from 1999's God Is Good and 1997's Lovin' God & Lovin' Each Other (six tracks each). The 16 panel CD booklet is excellent, including the name and year of the recording on which each song originally appeared, a history of the group, comments about several of the songs on this collection, and photos of each lineup since 1981. Fans should enjoy viewing the various faces (and hairstyles) that came and went over the years, as well as reading about how the group came to exist. Of course, I wouldn't expect lyrics to be included in a 37 song retrospective, but production info is provided for the four new recordings. Actually only three of the four newly recorded songs are brand new. "Can't Stop Talkin' About Him" is a remake of a song recorded by the GVB years ago, this time with more of a soulful approach. Of the remaining new tracks, "Second Fiddle" is the most adventurous. This David Phelps original puts bluegrass instruments over a pop music backdrop, and is on the borderline of being a "story song" in the spirit of "End Of The Beginning" . . . it's a bit more structured, though. Woody Wright 's "A Brand New Song" is just easy, pure blending harmony over a simple acoustic guitar based accompaniment, stretching out chords seemingly forever as only the Gaither Vocal Band can. The fourth new track is "A Picture Of Grace," a collaborative writing effort by the entire Vocal Band, plus Wright and Michael Parker . It's one of those ballads that draws you in slowly and then builds to a big ending . . . a good introduction to the singing abilities of Marshall Hall. In fact, each of the four newly recorded tracks features the new GVB member prominently. I was very surprised to note that no songs from Homecoming are included in this collection, considering it was so redefining for the Gaither Vocal Band. Otherwise, I think they've done a great job hitting the high spots for fans who may not already own all of their CDs. This collection affirms the consistent high standards of production quality the Gaither Vocal Band has adhered to over the years. The new tunes only whet my appetite for a full length recording by the current group. I hope it won't be too long in coming. Reader Comments

GVB,
I'm a special group/choir director for a mid-sized church. I eagerly snatch up each new relase of the GVB knowing there will be outstanding quartet music for our quartet to sing for the congregation. (Phelp's choral songs have been loved as well...Joy,Joy/The End of the Beginning) The recent release was outstanding. The song Picture of Grace is a wonderfully crafted song. We put on a non-profit musical about Noah which highlights the grace of God. We'd love to have our quartet sing Picture of Grace for this event. I've checked the Gaither online store every month since the release of the 'Best Of', called and sent email messages requesting an accomp trax, but I've been unsuccesful. Is there any way I can purchase an accomp. trax and sheet music for Picture of Grace? By the way, we really enjoyed the Homecoming event in Des Moines in 2004. Thanks for your ministry. I'm a huge fan and I love that you make the accomp traxs available to allow the music to be used in churches across America. They have been very powerful/inspiring in our church. David

Dear Sirs,
Has there been an accompaniment track made for Picture of Grace? The Lord has laid it on my heart to sing it at church and I can't find it. Let me know any helpful information. Thanks, Paul May

I don't think Gaither Music has released an original track for it yet, but Daywind has a track of that song. See:

Actually, it looks like they don't have it available at that online store yet, so try:
http://www.daywind.com/daywind01/store/index.html You should be able to get it directly from them.

I think everything the GBV do is great. They were the first Gospel Group I had ever listened too
and I was so Blessed by Yes I know the first song I heard. I was saved just never introduced to Gospel. I sing Yes I know I have it written on everything I own. I saw the GVB in Nasville on March 4th 05. I am a 2 time cancer patient fighting like we all do to live and I wanted to see the Homecoming choir too. Hopefully next time. A picture of Grace Terrific Got all the HC Videos I want to see and hear all the gospel as long as my Father allows me to stay here. When it is time maybe this 48 year old will sing yes I know in the Heavenly choir. God Bless all the GVG Bill, Gloria and Guy I love to hear you sing as well as the rest of you.

Love to see these guys tour by themselves. It would have to be awesome. I think they'd be AWESOME in a good, spiritual church!
With this kind of talent and history these guys could do 3 hour concerts, and nobody would leave early! How about it Bill?....
