Only on rare occasions have their been artists that with each recording, it’s like listening to them for the first time; such as the case with the Dunaways. I remember the feeling I felt when I heard their music for the first time. It was their “Beautiful Day” recording and I remember the giddy feeling I felt when I realized I was listening to something unique and awesome. Well, I got that same feeling when I started listening to “Revival”. I had unreasonably high expectations for the Dunaways with this recording, because they have set a very high standard for themselves in my book with their previous releases, and this recording surpassed them all.
The Cajun flavor of the highly enjoyable “PRAISE THE LORD” really does a great job setting the tone for the recording. You can’t help but sing along as the tune really sticks with you long after the music stops. (A sure sign of a great radio tune!)
Recently recorded by Brian Free & Assurance, “IT’S ALL ABOUT THE BLOOD”, penned by Tammy Dunaway along with Marty Funderburke, features a tremendous performance by LaWayne and Kanah as they render their own rendition of this great song before turning in what is, quite possibly their finest performance on the recording with the Joel Lindsey penned tune, “TRIAL BY FIRE”. Sung by mother/daughter team, Tammy and Kanah; what a great encouraging message found in the lyric of this song…”I won’t be consumed in this trial by fire, for I am persuaded my God will supply, the mercy and courage the victory requires, and I’ll walk on in triumph, from this trial by fire.”
Some might find the upbeat, “I FEEL THE JOY” to be a bit too “Pentecostal” for them, but it suits me just fine and is a highlight of the recording. The song features a really cool music track as well!
The bluegrass/acoustic flavor of “LET’S DO IT ALL OVER AGAIN”, penned by Larry Petree, fits Randall like a glove before things move on to another acoustical tune entitled, “WHEN MAMA’S PRAYERS ARE GONE”, written in part by Tammy and Kanah. Southern Gospel has always been filled with sappy mama songs, but this song is an exception. With the feel of a nice country ballad, Kanah delivers a very heartfelt performance before the pace picks up for the exciting, “CALL THE NAME”, which features Randall. This riveting country sounding tune features an exciting music track featuring piano fills, guitar fills, along with fiddle, banjo, dobro, steel and more, allowing this song to be far from boring.
The message found in the medium tempo, “WHAT GOD CAN’T DO” reminds us that there are a few things that God cannot do…”God can’t say no to a sinner that prays for forgiveness, He cannot remember the sin in my past, and He cannot show a greater love than Calvary to you…He’s can’t be unfaithful, God cannot lie, He cannot refuse the righteous when they cry, He cannot be kept from those that He loves, by death by life, things below or above…I’m amazed at what God cannot do”. What a wonderful promise found in this little gem of a song!
Tammy sings one of her own compositions “THE WARRIORS ARE PRAYING FOR ME”, and turns in a heartfelt performance on this wonderful song about prayer before Kanah kicks it back up with the uptempo, “REVIVAL TONIGHT”.
I am sure a highlight for many (myself included) is the Dottie Rambo classic, “I JUST CAME TO TALK WITH YOU LORD”. Featuring a guest solo by Dottie herself, this brings the recording to a close…but not before Dottie comes in and shares her story of how she wrote this classic tune.
I love the Dunaways sound; it’s a cross between the Rambos and the Isaacs, with a good dose of the Hemphills and a bit of the McGruders for taste. Full of energy and emotion, you can’t help but be taken in by their music. I know in some cases, Pentecostal groups tend to get a bad rap in some circles; but this is quality music, without giving up on the major spiritual impact they have. No matter your taste, the Dunaways are just about for everybody!
