In classic quartet style, the Dove Brothers Quartet have finally put together a wonderfully, unique recording that rivals any of their previous efforts, including my favorite DBQ recording, “Flying High.” Featuring songs written and arranged specifically for the DBQ by legendary songwriter and arranger Mosie Lister, the group shines bright on each and every song. Hovie Lister & The Statesmen originally recorded all but two of these songs over 40 years ago and the DBQ brought these songs back fresh and anew. This is one of two recordings released in the last month featuring songs written by Mosie Lister and this is also the first mainline release by the Dove Brothers Quartet featuring their new bass singer, David Hester. From the classic quartet sounds of “BLOW YOUR TRUMPET, GABRIEL” to the dramatic sounds of “HERE COMES THE KING” which features a masterful performance by Eric Dove , this recording is the essence of pure, traditional quartet music.

The slight country stylings of “NOTHING CAN COMPARE” which features an excellent performance by David Hester is a highlight of the recording for me, as is the highly energetic “WADE ON OUT”, which has always been one of my all-time favorite Statesmen Quartet numbers and the DBQ does not disappoint in presenting an extremely infectious performance of the song.

Jerry Martin shows us what sweet tenor singing is all about with his excellent performance on “IF TO GAIN THE WORLD”. Keeping things at a slower pace, the group performs “I WONDER WHAT MY NEW ADDRESS WILL BE” (complete with a new recitation written by McCray) and “I FOUND A NEW FRIEND”, which are both extremely well done.

Picking the pace back up, we come to the song, “MOVIN' TO THE RHYTHM OF THE GOSPEL”. Contrary to the title, this song just doesn't move me! I just am not sold on the song. Slowing back down just a bit, we come to the song “THE KING AND I” and the DBQ do a splendid job on the song.

I absolutely love the song “ON REVIVAL DAY”. This is a fun song to listen to and one I find myself listening to over and over again. The tune will stick with you, so be prepared to be humming it all day long!

I have been a big DBQ fan since their inception, and have always felt that their recording “Flying High” was their finest offering ever. This recording runs parallel to that recording in my opinion. As brilliant as this recording is, my one hang up is the orchestrations. While the live brass sounds splendid on “On Revival Day”, they would have sounded just as awesome on “Here Comes the King”, where fake orchestrations were used. One of my biggest pet peeves is flip-flopping live and fake orchestrations on a recording. But nonetheless, this is a fantastic recording and I believe to be one of the finest released this year.

This in my opinion too, is the best project the Dove Brothers have ever done. It's like they settled down and did some "just plain ole good singing". Great review and nice job Dove Brothers
