After about 5 years in the making, this tribute to Dottie Rambo has finally been released. We are delighted to hear many of our favorite Homecoming artists singing several classic Rambo tunes. Some of the featured artists include Bob Cain, Vestal Goodman, Jake Hess, Kim Hopper, Candy Hemphill-Christmas, James Blackwood, the Crabb Family, Terry Blackwood, Jeannie Johnson, Mary Tom Speer, Jesse Dixon, Sandy Patti and others.
Highlights for me include the Crabb Family, along with Dottie singing a stirring rendition of “TEARS WILL NEVER STAIN THE STREETS OF THAT CITY”. Another highlight is Jeannie Johnson's very emotional rendition of “IF THAT ISN'T LOVE”. It is hard not to be moved after her performance of that song. Of course, hearing Vestal belt out “THE HOLY HILLS OF HEAVEN” was exhilarating, as was the grand finale of Sandy Patti churning out once more her Dove Award winning song, “WE SHALL BEHOLD HIM”.
On the DVD, there were 2 extra songs that alone, are worth the price of the video. The first song is the Rambos from the Gospel Singing Jubilee in the early 1970s singing, “BUILD MY MANSION NEXT DOOR TO JESUS” and the second song is a solo performance from Dottie from the mid 1980s singing “HE LOOKED BEYOND MY FAULT”.
Other songs include, “WHEN I LIFT UP MY HEAD”, “ONE MORE VALLEY”, “REMIND ME, DEAR LORD”, “ON THE SUNNY BANKS”, “SHELTERED IN THE ARMS OF GOD”, “I'VE NEVER BEEN THIS HOMESICK BEFORE”, “MAMA'S TEACHING ANGELS HOW TO SING”, “I GO TO THE ROCK”, “TOO MUCH TO GAIN TO LOSE” and “HOLY SPIRIT, THOU ART WELCOME”.
My one major gripe with this DVD is that much of it was recorded in 1999. My understanding is that this project was intended to be released 4-5 years ago. Why the wait? We do find many of those involved have since deceased…Howard and Vestal Goodman, Glen Payne, Rex Nelon, Jake Hess, Bob Cain, James Blackwood, Jack Toney, and so on. In many ways, it makes this tribute appear rather dated. But, it's still a great release and makes for excellent viewing. The commentary between Bill and Dottie makes it very interesting to watch and some of the comments by some of the other Homecoming artists are very nice as well.
