A lot of people within the Southern Gospel community may not be familiar with Denver & The Mile High Orchestra, but they should! This recording is an excellent introduction for those yet unfamiliar with this musical gem. A throwback to the big band days, D&MHO seem to have created their own little niche within gospel music and they definitely have a unique style. Filled with strong gospel lyrics, here you will find the best musical offerings this band has to offer since their inception a few years ago, along with three brand new recordings.
The recording starts out with a new cut, a big band rendition of "THE STAR SPANGLED BANNER". Afterwards, we filter through a stream of remixed previously recorded material. It is kind of neat listening to D&MHO’s sound "evolutionize" (yeah, I made that word up!) from the more unadulterated true big band stylings to a more modern pop-contemporary-big band sound. Those early tunes, "ACT THE SCAT", "SPEND MY LIFE", "HEAVEN KNOWS" and "THIS SIDE OF TOWN" really showcase the raw big band feel of their beginnings, while "ONE TIME SHOW", "YOU AIN’T SEEN NOTHIN’ YET", "NEVER GONNA SAY", "GOOD TO GO" and "ALL RIGHT" show them maturing to a more modern feel, while still maintaining a very strong nostalgic big band sound that would make Benny Goodman and Lawrence Welk proud.
Ending much like it starts, the recording closes with 2 new tunes, "LOVE OF MY LIFE" and "HOOSIER DADDY" (a musical tribute to the state of Indiana, which also mentions Bill Gaither’s name in a verse, so there’s your Southern Gospel tie for those looking for one!).
If you’ve never taken the time to introduce yourself to the music of Denver & The Mile High Orchestra, this recording begs to be THE introduction for you.
