Encouragement for the New Year
![]() For worship leaders Christmas can be excruciating. Productions, rehearsals, hours and hours of prep work, promotion in the community and…leading worship on Sundays of course. Christmas can be a very frustrating time to lead worship. One would think just the opposite but let me assure you when it comes to times of the year in the Christian calendar that accommodate worship leading, Advent and Christmas is one of the more difficult seasons. At least it has been in my experience… Some might think that a time filled with so much expectancy, benevolence and celebration would be ideal for the church worship leader. That is what I used to think. But, then again, I am a worship leader. I love to follow the liturgical calendar and create worship services that beautifully illustrate the wonder of the seasons we celebrate. I think the intimate familiarity with the beloved songs of the season and the constant bombardment of them upon our ears in malls, grocery stores, radio, TV specials, etc… desensitize us to the sacred truth and revealing text in the lyrics. By the time we gather as a congregation to sing Silent Night all we can think of is how many times we’ve heard Bing Crosby sing it over the airwaves. Our worship services take a nostalgic turn instead of engaging God in heartfelt worship. Sure we may get that all over “warm fuzzy” but that is a far cry from a sense of the felt presence of God. So as we trudge out of the dregs of Christmas madness and employ our plan for the New Year some of you may be absolutely exhausted and discouraged. To that I say, “Be hopeful friend…” The plans you were so eager to get to work on back in the early fall or whenever you planned your 2008 are still worth your optimistic enthusiasm! As you prayerfully laid out your year your hopes were high that you would lead your team and your congregation to higher heights and probe deeper depths in worship. Don’t allow the flame that has probably been burned from both ends of the candle for the past few months to flicker out. Blow with passionate breath and rekindle the flame that sparks the fire that moves you week after week and day after day to be the worshiper that seeks to lead and serve your congregation and community. Motivate them…Teach them…Lead them…Worship with them. Your vision is still worthwhile. Your calling remains sure. Go man, Go! (Okay…Get some rest first and then GO!) Lead your congregation to heights so high they will brush lifted hands upon angel’s wings…! To depths so deep that they will begin to discover the treasures of the vast riches and wisdom of the knowledge and love of God! Take heart compatriot, a new year is here and with it opportunities known and unknown to sing the glories of God and worship him with all of your heart, all of your soul, all of your mind and all of your strength. Well said, Aaron!
That "encouraging word" is good for everyone that has "too much" to do thru the Christmas season; from the worship leaders, Christmas Play directors, all the way down the the participants in the above mentioned.... So, whether you are in a big, uptown church with a 100 voice choir, or a new mission work with 10 or 12 singing out of the "Red Hymnal".... keep on keepin' on! Because HE is Worthy!
