Once in awhile a recording will come along that moves you and fills you with so much excitement, that you just can't wait to tell everybody about it. Well friends, this is that recording. This is a superb effort from the Greenes and is one of the best recordings to come out for 2007 and could quite possibly be the finest work from the Greenes, ever.
Starting out in typical Greenes fashion is the high energy tune, "GLORIOUS TOMORROW", written by Phil Cross. Things move on to the slightly progressive sounds of the Rebecca Peck penned, "THAT'S WHY WE SING ABOUT HEAVEN", which features an excellent performance by Brad Hudson. This infectious song is one you'll definitely find yourself hitting the repeat button with and the tune just won't leave your head.
Known for their power ballads, no Greenes recording would be complete without at least one, and the powerful "GOD IS SINGING OVER ME" is that power ballad. I love the line in the song that says, "My God rejoices with a song of love, I'm overwhelmed that I'm the one He's singing of." This song has "hit song" written all over it and is one of TaRanda's most powerful performances ever.
I love the vocal work on the beginning of the Dottie Rambo penned, "WE'VE WEATHERED STORMS BEFORE", which features Tony Greene and the group does a superb job singing the song, as well as on another Rambo penned tune, "STAND BY THE RIVER". (A song in which my 6 yr old has already committed to memory, including the phrasing of "ri-vah" for "river"!)
With the classic hymn "Amazing Grace" as a backdrop, Brad sings the steel guitar infested, emotionally tinged, "CLOSER TO WHERE I'M GOING" before TaRanda turns in a masterpiece with yet another Dottie Rambo song, "LOVE LETTERS". I dare say that there is no one in the entire gospel music industry who can interpret the beautifully penned words of this song like TaRanda. Though the song was written 30 years ago, (long before TaRanda was born) it sounds as if it was written especially for her. What a perfect match between emotionally borne lyrics and genuine, heartfelt vocals. This is one of those few and far between magical moments that many artists try too hard to achieve, but rarely ever attain.
Things get propelled into high gear as Tony sings the invigorating "THE OTHER SIDE OF THE FLOOD", written by McCray Dove and Jerry Kelso, before Brad steps back up to sing the medium tempo, "MERCY FOUND ROOM FOR ME", which features a chorus of one of my favorite songs, "When He Reached Down His Hand for Me". I can easily see this song becoming a radio single.
Recently recorded by the Daryl Williams Trio and penned in part by Daryl Williams, TaRanda slows the pace back down with the thought provoking, "WHEN GOD HAS ANOTHER PLAN" before the pace changes again for the progressive sounding Joseph Habedank and Matthew Holt penned tune, "GIVIN' IN TO GIVIN' UP", which features Brad.
In complete contrast with how the recording began, "ALL FOR ME" features a heartfelt performance by Tony Greene and closes things out in reverent fashion.
If you sense that I'm excited about this recording, you're correct. There really isn't a bad song on this recording at all; each song is flawlessly sung, backed by exceptional musicianship and are all brilliantly arranged. Truthfully, it's way beyond just the commercial and musical aspects of the recording, these are songs that not only sound like masterpieces, they are all truly lyrical works of art, and the Greenes, being the artists that they are, magically made them come to life.
