Nashville, TN is has been home to many great Southern Gospel groups. Southern Sound is a fine quartet, singing classic
Southern Gospel quarter music and doing it very well.
“What On Earth Are You Doing” is a great quartet tune with a lot of modern harmony. It’s a good choice to open the album. “Look Down That Lonesome Road” features bass singer, Alan Brewster. This old spiritual is a nice addition to this project.
They have included the old Hank Williams song, “House of Gold”. Mike Young, tenor for Southern Sound, sings this song well. They keep the tempo up on this song and sing it with a lot of drive. Trevor Haley sings baritone for Southern Sound and also is the writer of the next song, “In the Book”.
Alan takes the lead on the first ballad of the project, “Grace Found a Place”, a song from the pen of Rodney Griffin. Alan has a very nice bass tone and sings this song very well.
Ben Harris sings, “Ain’t Worth Talkin’ About”. His style reminds me a little of Ed Enoch and that’s not bad. This song was written by Trevor Haley along with Jean Hooper.
Trevor Haley sings a very pretty ballad, written by Marlene Childress and Teresa Lutz., “Before I Called Him Father”. The old Martha Carson song, “Can’t Stand Up Alone”, features Mike Young. This song has some interesting chord progressions and it was nice to hear this song again.
“Closer to Thee” is a classic song that I originally heard the Statesmen Quartet do. Southern Sound does it up right. “I John” is another old spiritual, once recorded by Elvis Presley. This song is a lot of fun with lots of energy. “There Is a Haven” is a pretty mid tempo, country ballad, written by Dianne Wilkinson. Alan does a beautiful job on this song, originally recorded by the Cathedrals.
Duane Allen of the Oak Ridge Boys is the writer of the next song, “No More”. The vocal on this song reminds me a lot of a young Duane Allen. Southern Sound has included the old Whitey Gleason tune, “That’s Enough”. This is always a fun song. Southern Sound closes the project out with a song from the pen of Bob Prather, “Headin’ Home”. This song has a blues flavor to it.
This is my first chance to hear Southern Sound. They remind me a lot of the Melody Boys Quartet stylistically. There are those who would say that Southern Gospel quartet music is a dying genre but I don’t think that quality music ever goes out of style. Southern Sound is doing a great job of preserving our heritage. Thanks guys for a very enjoyable project. This one will find its way to my CD player a lot.
