Since the first time I heard their music, I've been a huge fan of the Dills. I predict these guys will make a huge splash in this industry, for not just their music (which stands on its own merit), but also for their spirit because these guys are the real deal. These 4 individuals are not only loaded with tons of talent as a collective, but also as individuals, as each individual brings passionate vocals and unique qualities to the table. If you've not yet heard these guys, now is the time.

The progressive "I WILL GO THE DISTANCE", featuring Shawn, starts things off and leads into the uptempo, guitar infested, "FIGHT TO THE FINISH", which features Bridget. The tempo then slows down for Tim's commanding performance on the thought provoking, "I CARRIED HIS CROSS", before picking the pace back up as LeeAnn is featured next singing, "TO WORSHIP YOU".

Shawn kicks the mid way point off with the power ballad, "THE CLOSER I GET TO THE CROSS" before Tim turns in his rendition of "THE SOUND OF HIS VOICE", which had previously been recorded by the Hoskins Family about 4 years ago. Bridget takes the encore of the song and then continues on as she sings the title song, "UNCOMMON", which fit Bridget like a glove.

The uptempo "WONDER WORKING POWER" (also recently recorded by the Crist Family) and "GOD WILL GO" (I can't help but think that radio would just eat this song up!) finish out the recording on a positive, uplifting note.

Even though the title of this recording is named after a song, it aptly describes the music of the Dills; as these guys are an uncommon find, and a rare gem. Even though I thought they sounded great on their previous works, musically this is definitely a step up for the Dills. Only a couple of gripes.one is the lack of songs. With only 9 songs, and a total running time of slightly over 32 minutes, I felt cheated, and I think the majority of the buying public may feel the same. Also, I was really looking for another "Jesus Never Fails" or "I am Redeemed", but none were to be found. Other than that, this is a top notch recording by one of Southern Gospel Music's brightest talents, and a wonderful collaboration between the Dills and producer, Kevin Ward.

Song titles: (stars denote personal favorites)
1 - I Will Go the Distance
2 - Fight to the Finish**
3 - I Carried His Cross**
4 - To Worship You
5 - The Closer I Get to the Cross
6 - The Sound of His Voice**
7 - Uncommon**
8 - Wonder Working Power
9 - God Will Go**

Reader Comments

I am not an industry insider.. just a fan.. and I do some SG radio stuff.. including song recommendations for stations.

Up till this CD.. I have not recommended a DILLS single for airplay. Not that they aren't nice, talented people.. I just never heard anything that jumped out and grabbed me for radio.

I think: This CD is worthy of radio airplay.

As far as the DILLS on stage,.. I have only heard them do one or two songs on a showcase.. and they sounded pretty good,.. However.. that's not really enough for me to make a sound judgement call.

Mr Cotter has every right to make his comments here.. I think the Dills understand that.. and can take it. From a Christian standpoint.. I might have worded the critique a little different.. but.. that's just me.

Insiders: carry on!

Hello everyone,
I've got to say I completely disagree with all the negative comments that have been made about the Dills and their music. I have never been a big fan of gospel music, honestly I had no idea who any of these artists were but all it took was one time to hear thier music live in concert and on CD and I was hooked. I have known these guys for a long time and they have definetly improved over the years and really stepped up thier game especially with this last CD "Uncommon" to me that describes them to a "T". The passion in thier songs are like no other, thier love for the Lord and the ministry of Christ that they share with others is AWESOME!!. They have brought so many lost souls to the Lord through thier music they must be doing somthing right. My 3 year old is thier biggest fan of all time. Every time we get in the car the first words out of his mouth is "can I hear the Dills momma?" How wonderful is that? HE knows all the words to every song and he tells everyone we meet about them. I thank God everydayfor groups like the Dills. They have voices like angels in concert or on CD. They glorify the Lord each time they step on stage whether it be an old country church or some big venue. Money is not what it is all about folks!!! How many songs you have on radio. Sure all those things are great and if you have all of that then you should feel blessed. I feel that the Dills are right where they need to be and thier new cd Uncommon will put them up there with the best of them. God will take care of them and thier music and one day very soon they will be a household name in southern gospel music. So keep up the good work guys. Keep doing what you do best and we all know what that is............SINGING AND PRAISING THE LORD!!!GOD GAVE YOU ALL GREAT TALENTS SO KEEP CLIMBING AND REACHING FOR THE STARS. WE ALL LOVE YOU!!!!!

Chris D. Unthank's avatar Wow. I like the Dills. Let me take that back. I LOVE the Dills - both personally and professionally.

I HAVE seen them in concert many times, and can tell you that even though they may not be the best overall singers or have the tightest blend, they are VERY good at what they do and I wouldn't hesitate one minute to recommend this group to any pastor or promoter.

Carry on guys. You are FANTASTIC!

Well Jason, as I look at the comments it appears that you've stepped into a pretty large pile. I understand that you're concerned that southern Gospel music doesn't get the respect that it should. On the other hand, I highly doubt that improved stage presence and tighter vocals are going to solve that, at least as a whole. That's because the Gospel which we sing about is offensive. As long as it's the gospel we sing about we're not going to be invited to play in the sandbox with everybody else, (though it appears that's what some would die for). Yes - we should attempt to do what we do for Christ with excellence - and some are going to that better than others. But by now, after reading the comments on this blog, I'm sure that you've noticed that there at least appears to be a big disconnect between what the average Christian who attends a chuch concert is touched by, as opposed to what the "insiders" think should represent SG music on the radio. And I'm that gives some people fits.
May we all do our best for Christ.

I am seriously concerned about the Spiritual and Christian character of some of the critcal comments of so called professionals. I am sure there are groups whose sound is better than the Dills but I have not heard them yet.
The Dills will top those groups sound with the geniue, heartfelt, sincere, uplifting spirit that they bring to their live message for Christ. Maybe you need to attend a church serive they minister to in the Spirit of God instead of the "industry" and the works of the flesh.

Chuck, you are correct. I did come off as pompus and arrogant...I apologize. My only concern for this group was that they seem to want the appearance of a pro group...the bus, the look, the vocally processed cd...(granted most groups have this done on their vocals..)when their money could have went into getting some vocal and performance coaching. And hey... the only pile I've stepped in is a pile full of people rooting for the little man...most of you guys I know or have met, and are singers who never made it, or are trying to make it. Don't give me the "we aren't trying to make it either....if the industry came calling for you...you'de be running to them. And that is ok....we all have ambitions and goals...but that's where the talent level separates us all. I understood this when I got involved. My concern was that the Dills read all of this and come away with two things...a realization that they have plenty of fans that are loyal to them and will support and back them...and to take what harsh critism they may have gotten, and work on it, perfecting their craft. Bruce, no man can judge me or determine my salvation or walk with the Lord. If the Lord is not in this industry, or doesn't have his hand upon this music, then why are the Dills trying to break-into an industry working in the flesh? You can tell me all day that they just want to use the industry glamour, the SG radio, and SG crowd just to launch themselves, or to reach other people, but I say different. Deep down, we all wouldn't mind being the next Hoppers, or Sig.Sound...and if you say you don't your in denial...lol Hey...the local group at my home church can top the big groups with their geniue, heartfelt, sincere, uplifting spirit that they bring on stage, proclaiming the message of Christ. But are they blessed with the talent to reach out nationally? No...the good news is that they know this, and don't attempt to waste their money chasing stars...So I will end my debate with this... The Dills have some work to do vocally and performance wise...did I ever say they couldn't accomplish this task? No. But perhaps they've made it far enough past the fans, the pastors, and their mom and dad telling them how great they are and how they are better than all the other singers and groups...perhaps its time to really step it up a few more notches...listen to others who have been in their shoes... allow the critism to help mold their sound...the things that I pointed out for them are some rough edges in their performances... Here is a list of groups that have been where they are at...and they made it past the pats on the backs... and learned to really bring their performances together...
The Crabb Family
The Beene Family
The Hoppers
Hope's Call
The Whisnants

To the Dills: I pray that the Lord uses you all in areas that most groups can not go... I pray that He truly leads you in all that you do..all the decisions you make, and the songs that you sing. Please take the things you have heard here and grow upon them. Seek out a vocal coach... its very important to sing and perform correctly so that you aren't hurting yourselves physically and professionally. The groups that have made it....all have been through this process... its part of studying to show yourselves approved. Also know that you have my support and prayers...despite what others may think who have posted on this cd review! I'll be watching and listening....

Chris D. Unthank's avatar I guess the main problem I have with your posts - "Jason" - is that you seem to act like you know the hearts and intentions of this group. Having known them for quite a while, having spent time with them both on and off the stage, I can tell you that your "assumptions" about this group are pretty offbase.

This is a group of people that truly love what they are doing, and if they were to stay at the same level they are at now, singing to the same size crowds they are now, they would be content, because they are doing what they love.

Not every up and coming group out there have these grand desires or have stars in their eyes. In fact, I would dare say that most of the part-timers and up and comers I've spoken with just do it cause they love to sing and want to touch people's lives. Their intentions have nothing to do with being the biggest act out there right now.

Sure, the Dills have things they could work on, but so does every group. No group in Southern Gospel is truly doing everything right and could work on something. I'm not exactly sure why you are pointing your finger so sternly at the Dills.

I'm surprised at the comment regarding their abilities. I had never heard them before this past summer (live or recorded) nor known anything about them but I was impressed with their vocal ability. The only thing I was surprised by was 4 vocalists and no bass, which is an unusual configuration, but they seemed to have doubled the right parts and carried it out well. Maybe you haven't heard them lately? There are a lot of other groups performing out there that I would question their musical/vocal ability before I'd question the Dills!
