I recently went to Regina, Seskatchewan, Canada to sing for Allan & Alma Kissner’s 50th anniversary celebration. Alma had asked me to be the surprise guest for the evening, so my hosts Don & Marian Williams graciously attended to my every need along with keeping me hidden. You see, after fifty years of marriage, Alma had found that Allan is a very hard man to surprise. So she thought the best way to surprise him on their anniversary was to bring in a singer from the states. I’m happy to say we pulled it off and I thoroughly enjoyed myself as the festivities unfolded in honor of Allan & Alma.

There was a huge crowd of family and friends gathered to honor this sweet couple and as the evening progressed, we enjoyed much laughter, food, music and above all, a great appreciation for Allan & Alma who mean so much to them.

As their friend, Sophie Rossum, stood giving honor to Allan & Alma, I was touched by the advice she gave as she shared a few things that she believed their love could teach us. I thought it would speak to you as it spoke to me and asked her if I could share a little with you. Here’s an excerpt....

A successful marriage requires falling in love many times with the same person. It is much more than finding the right person, it is being the right person. Treat each day together as a gift and an adventure. Friendship is the cement that holds a relationship together. It takes imagination to make a relationship flourish. Happiness is not the absence of conflict, but the ability to cope with it. A relationship that grows from mutual love and respect, kindness, understanding and compassion is strong enough to last a lifetime. Love is sharing all of the wonderful things life has to offer with the person you care the most about.

Many friends and family gathered at the podium to share something about Allan & Alma, and I found myself more drawn into their lives as I heard how they have spent the last fifty years not only loving one another, but also loving those around them and making a difference in their lives.

What a great example of how a marriage should be! That’s the exact kind of marriage I want. One that’s filled with love and respect, kindness, understanding and compassion. The kind that makes you a better person just from being together. The kind that still has adventure and surprise after fifty years!
