A Safe Haven
Do you feel safe in your marriage? Do you know that your spouse has your best interests at heart? Do you have your spouse's bests interests at heart? You should. That's what marriage is all about. It's about finding that someone who makes your heart skip a beat, who brings out the best in you and who makes you feel safe in this crazy mixed up world. When you find “the one” for you, you're home.
Marriage is also about loving someone completely and unconditionally. So instead of jumping on the bandwagon of anger when your spouse does or says something that hurts your feelings, why not show love and understanding? Help them feel safe with you. Let them know you love them, even when they're not at their best. More than likely they didn't mean to be hurtful but were simply having a bad day.
Today, we are bombarded with the idea that we have rights and that we should fight for them and we often bring that philosophy into our marriages. We become picketers in a line of defense for our feelings and we're unknowingly marching all over the feelings of the one we say we love the most. Imagine what would happen in our marriages if we would consider our spouse's feelings
before our own? And what if instead of trying to make them see things our way, we tried to see things their way? What if we listened instead of arguing? What if instead of worrying that they aren't all we need, we worked to be all they need us to be? The impact would be life changing!
When there are problems at work, when finances are tight, when illness invades, when adversity causes the calm of your life to become a raging storm, your marriage should be your safe haven and your spouse the person you can count on to be there for you during those difficult times. Likewise, you should be the one your spouse can turn to for comfort and reassurance.
One of my favorite love songs was written by Steven Curtis Chapman and is entitled “I Will Be Here”. The first line says “Tomorrow morning if you wake up and the sun does
not appear, I will be here”. Jim sang that to me one day, beautifully declaring his love and devotion and I knew he meant every word. He is my safe haven.
Take some time today to let your sweetheart know you are there for them, that you still say “I do” and that you are their safe haven.
Some things you can say to show your spouse you are their safe haven:
I love you!
I’m sorry for not always considering your feelings and I promise to listen to your heart.
I believe in you, in all you are and in all you can do.
When you are weak I will be strong and together we can overcome any situation.
I am your safe haven.
You can trust me with your heart.
You are my everything!
