Memories of Herschel Lester
![]() I have to go back more years than I care to admit to remember the first time I ever saw Herschel Lester. It was an Easter Sunday morning at the Lincoln Avenue Church of God in E. St. Louis, Illinois. I must have been thirteen or fourteen years old, so this was in the early 1960's. I had seen several local groups at our church before, but this was the first time that I saw a group that had it together and a big part of why they had it together was Herschel Lester. He was the first person that I ever saw performing Gospel music that was actually having fun on the stage. Reader Comments
What a nice tribute, Deon, to a wonderful man. I, too, have nothing but fond memories of Herschel Lester.
The Lesters have sung several times in our church, and oh my, all of those great concerts I remember at the Kingsland Theater. Years ago when my wife and I purchased a piano, we bought it from the Lester Music Company. Herschel came himself to help deliver that piano. When you think of Gospel music in the St. Louis area, The Lesters are the first name that comes to mind. Herschel along with Mom and Pop Lester were, of course, a major reason why. Praise God we have the assurance we'll see him again. Until then, Herschel, we love you and we'll miss you.

Thanks for this great tribute to Herschel Lester. I was born and raised in E. St. Louis, Illinois and lived in the St. Louis area until just recently. I remember every Sunday morning as a little girl watching The "Lester Family Sings" on Channel 5 in St. Louis. I remember Herschel and Alene singing with Mom and Pop Lester. At the end of the show, Pop Lester always said, "Keep those cards and letters coming, folks." I remember watching Brian and Ginger grow up right along with me. The Lesters are wonderful, kind and generous people who have never really been recognized for their great talent, at least not as much as I think they should be. When attending their concerts, Herschel was always there, with a smile, greeting everyone. There is just no pretense with them. I can recall several times visiting the the store on S. 39th Street in St. Louis and once having Alene invite me right into their home. What sweet and humble folks they are! Herschel, we will all miss you.

Thanks Deon for the tribute to Herschel Lester. I had the honor of traveling with the Lesters for a few years back in the early eighties. I must tell you, everything you said about him was right. I was amazed at how well you knew him. I enjoyed the article very much. I must tell you, Herschel was a special man. You are right when you talk of his abilities, but I think his ability to make everyone feel special was his greatest talent of all. He was always smiling and joking. I can't recall the times he told me some of the funniest stuff I've ever heard. He was full of stories and knew just when you needed one to brighten your day. Also he was the constant professional. I have never seen Herschel in a situation he couldn't handle. He was the backbone of the Lesters even after he left the road. His departure left a hole in the hearts of many. His love for the students where he taught music in public school was so real. Looking back now I see how he understood that he was the only real hope some of those kids had. Herschel left the road in the hands of his children and stayed behind to help the kids he taught in East St. Louis.
I must tell you though, I have stood beside Brian Lester on stages all across America, back when he was my boss. Brian has the same amazing ability to touch the lives of all those around him. Just like his Dad, Brian Lester is the consistant professional. Anytime you see the Lesters in concert, (and if you haven't lately I suggest you go) notice the excitement, energy, and charisma Brian Lester has, and you will know then that the labor that Herschel Lester did was not in vain. Just like his Dad and Mom before him, Herschel handed the baton down to another generation, and MAN IS IT IN GREAT HANDS!
