SG Promoters
Our organization continues to grow. With growth comes change. As our members have learned, everyone has their own ideas about promoting. That is why some promoters are successful while others are not. Now that we are all sharing ideas and information, we are seeing more and more winners after many years of many in our industry suffering and many artists and promoters biting the dust. I am now seeing a spirit of togetherness that I have not seen before. New promoters are learning from older promoters and yes, we older promoters can learn from the new ones.
As SGPA members are learning, the playing field is not always level. For example, we found that some promoters were paying hundreds of dollars more for an artist than other promoters were paying for the same artist. That is changing, why? It is because our members are communicating. Promoters are also discovering new avenues of spreading the word about concerts. The days are gone when you could buy 10 spots on the local radio and 1 newspaper ad and have a crowd. We now have to draw from a larger area. For my concerts, I try to cover as large a territory as possible. I do this with local advertisement of course, but also with Internet and our trade magazines. It cost more to advertise now than ever before, but it also cost more for everything than ever before. Ticket prices are higher because the artist’s fees are more, and the artist is charging more because expenses are more.
I will say that dollar for dollar, gospel music is still the best entertainment out there. And yes, I did say entertainment! If we do not entertain, the audience will not buy tickets. Yes, the SGPA is growing and we are learning. We will continue to grow but we must also continue to learn.
