“Livin’ for the Lord,” kicks off the record with the male vocalist of this mixed trio, Stacey. I’m a little disappointed that this is the first cut. I’m a firm believer in putting your best foot forward and I don’t think this one is even in the top five songs of the record. The next song, “Heaven is my Goal” is a bit tighter and perhaps would have been a better choice. Kevin Moore does a great job with the fiddle accents on this tune, making it quite enjoyable. Reign Song stayed true to their traditional roots on this record, which is where I believe they have their best sound. “Crossing Over Jordan,” is a medium tempo song, featuring one of the ladies. Other than a few pitch issues, I think this is one of the strongest tunes on the project.
Things slow down with “Every Knee Will Bow,” and I notice that the lead female vocal seems to have some Talley influences. The title cut, “When God Shows Up,” continues to make me think Talley trio. I think this vocal arrangement tends to be their smoothest sound. “Prayed Up” was a little bit lyrically weak for me, but I enjoyed the melody and arrangement of this song. “Travelin’ On” is always an SG favorite and Reign Song does a great rendition. Chris Binion’s “He Could Have Called Ten Thousand Angels,” provides the group with a fantastic last impression. This is a song I would rewind and listen to again and again. There were a few other songs on the project, such as “When I lay My Burdens Down, and Blood On the Mercy Seat,” but neither one really jumped out at me as being really good or really bad. They just seemed to be filler songs. I know every song can’t be a hit, but I’m just explaining why I didn’t elaborate on them.
These are the kind of reviews I love to do. I had the privilege of reviewing Reign Song’s last project, and though it wasn’t a five star record, I could hear their potential. “When God Shows Up,” shows some great improvement and I am proud to give them half a star more than last time. Their energy was much better on this record which affected their vocal dynamics positively. There were still a few rough patches, but overall their pitches were greatly improved. As before, they chose great songs and the packaging looks nice. I still look for them to improve their dynamics even more. I believe that would fix their pitch problems all together. I’m looking forward to the future of this group.
