Where do I begin? Russ Taff, a name synonymous with great music and that hasn’t changed. NOW MORE THAN EVER, he deserves our continued respect. Though this project, I believe is made up of songs previously recorded by “the voice”, it is no less valid. Sure, I would have loved to hear something new, but these ARE new tracks and arrangements as well as featuring some of SG’s best voices. Charlotte Richie, The Isaacs and Michael English just to name a few. The record kicks off with the blues infused “Somebody’s Coming,” followed by a swinging version of “The Sweetest Song I Know.” “I’m Glad” really has an Andre’ Crouch feel, and definitely one of my favorites. The title cut, “More than Ever” is written by Bill and Gloria Gaither and friend Woody Wright. What beautiful lyrics! The emotion filled lyrics of the Gaithers are a perfect marriage with Russ’ amazing vocal expression.
“Just Believe” has a funky kind of groove that you find yourself bobbing your head to. “The Really Big News” which Russ previously recorded with the vocal band reminds us what things really matter in life. “Jesus is the Best Thing” is a song that leaves me shaking my head. How does this guy do it? He nails every song. It’s one thing to make every pitch, and pick good songs, but Russ puts everything he has into every note. He makes you feel the lyrics of these songs even if they don’t particularly relate to you. “Thanks to Calvary” shows off his “vocal” range while “Until I found the Lord” shows his “dynamic” range.
The project closes with another Gaither tune, “Hurt By Hurt,” co-written with J.D. Miller. Other songs included are; “Jesus Loves Me, I Believe in a Hill Called Mount Calvary, Heartbreak Ridge and New Hope Road and At the Altar.” I thoroughly enjoyed every single cut. I honestly have no criticism. The man is a legend in his own time. This is a great record for fans and collectors. It would also be good for someone who is just discovering Russ Taff, as it gives a good overview of his past works. If you’re a fan of SG, or simply a believer you will find something on this record that you like. Buy It!
