Merry Christmas
It is hard to believe that another year has come and gone. This has been an interesting year to say the least. We have seen numerous personnel changes in the Artist groups. We have also seen some Artists disband. As for the SGPA, I think it has been one of our better years in that our membership has grown, our revenue has been good due to the projects we have shared, and all of the Officers are doing a great job.
The thing that I am most encouraged about is the fact that we are now communicating with each other on a regular basis. Promoters are now comparing everything from the artist fees to contract demands. At our meeting at NQC it was discovered that some promoters were paying $1000 to $1500 more for some artists than other promoters were paying. I think our meetings this year have been more productive than ever before.
I believe promoters are wiser than ever, and I believe the SGPA has and continues to have a big impact in our industry. By comparing notes, we now know who is paying what amount to what artist. We are beginning to level the playing field. After our meeting I had some promoters, three in fact, to call me and tell me that they had negotiated next year dates and were saving $500 to $1000 on some fees. They realized that they were paying too much and gave thanks to the SGPA for now knowing that they can negotiate.
We found also that an artist will work a church date on Thursday night for $500 and an offering, or sometime just an offering, but charged a promoter a flat fee of $3500 for Friday night.
I just believe if an artist can work for a church for an offering, then they can be flexible with the promoters. I also believe that an artist should be paid a fair price, but I believe that fair price should be give to everyone alike, including churches.
Someone in our industry called me and warned me that it was against the law to fix prices. Duh! This is still a free Country and I know of no law that says I cannot decide how much I will or will not pay for an artist. And, by the way, I have a better relationship with the artists now than I have ever had.
You cannot imagine the heat that I have taken since I have been encouraging our members to compare prices, and I do mean real heat. But I do not let that dissuade me as I can see the results of our comparing notes and many of you have confirmed the same to me. So, it must be working.
The SGPA is becoming a force that others do not like to see.
