Amy Marie Unthank

Do I make one or do I not? That's the question at this time of year. New Year's Resolutions. I think they are quite ridiculous. Really, I believe more people break them than they do keeping them. I've decided this year to make my New Year's Resolution the opposite of what I want. Cause then when I break it, it will be a good thing, right? Haha! Just kidding. But in all honesty, I believe every resolution I've ever made I've broken. I wish I could say that it wasn't so, but it is.

Ahhh, resolutions I think should be made all year, not just at the start of a new one. I resolve to read my Bible more each day. Why must I start this at the start of a new year? I resolve to get more involved in my church. Again, why must I start this at the start of the year? What makes us think that we can start anew the first of the year any better than RIGHT NOW? I've never quite understood that thinking. If I feel a need to study God's Word more, or a need to practice my talents more, or even a need to "lose some weight" why don't I start RIGHT NOW rather than wait for the first of the year? This is all easier said than done, as I'm sure most of you know.

My thought always goes to my childhood. I'm sure some of you can relate. You're in church hearing the evangelist preach, most of the time it's in regards to Christ's second coming and how the end is near. No one knows the day or the hour of Christ's return, why waste the hours we do have, waiting for another day to start our resolutions? If you break them, start again. Christ doesn't cast us out forever when we break our promises to him. He allows us to pick up the pieces and start again.

I want to encourage you this month. If you do decide on a Resolution, don't worry so much about breaking it. You can always pick up the pieces and start again. So you cheat on your diet, give yourself some grace and pray for strength to start again. So you missed a day of Bible reading, allow yourself to dive into grace and pray for strength to start again. We're human, we fail, but God's Grace is sufficient. His strength is perfect. We are made in His image and His Grace and Strength follows us all our days.

This year, my New Year's Resolution is based on the song made famous by Hope's Call - to "Keep On Keepin" On"! What's yours?
